Xenoblade Chronicles X Finally Coming to Nintendo Switch

As a seasoned gamer who has been through the trials and tribulations of multiple console generations, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement upon hearing about the upcoming release of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition on Nintendo Switch. While the Wii U was often overlooked due to its commercial failure, it was a goldmine for some truly exceptional games, and Xenoblade Chronicles X was undoubtedly one of them.

Although the Wii U didn’t sell well, it was home to some exceptional games by Nintendo. Most of these games have found a second life on the Nintendo Switch, with hits like Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, and Pikmin 3 all making appearances. However, one notable exception has been Xenoblade Chronicles X. But that’s about to change! This morning, Nintendo announced that Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition will be available on the Nintendo Switch on March 20th, 2025. While Nintendo hasn’t revealed any changes yet from the Wii U version, a trailer for the game suggests there might be a new, enigmatic character.

The first trailer for Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition can be found below.

In simple terms, Xenoblade Chronicles X is a self-contained adventure game that doesn’t require knowledge of previous series installments. The story unfolds in the year 2054, focusing on humanity’s efforts to establish a new home on the planet Mira. With our own kind on the brink of extinction due to an interstellar war, Mira might be our last chance for survival. One appealing aspect is that players can design their own personalized mech for exploration in the vast open-world game environment. Additionally, Xenoblade Chronicles X offers multiplayer missions that are likely to be more accessible on the Nintendo Switch due to its larger player base compared to the Wii U.

This is definitely not the Nintendo news people were expecting this morning, but Xenoblade fans are pretty happy about it! With this release, the entirety of the Xenoblade franchise will now be available on one system. That’s great news for those who got into the series in more recent years. The RPG franchise has become an important one for Nintendo, and this should help tide fans over while they wait for the next full entry. Director Tetsuya Takahashi has been vague about the future of the series, but it seems like a safe bet that Xenoblade Chronicles 4 could be released on Nintendo’s next system.
