As a movie critic who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless cinematic trends over the past few decades, I must admit that the Y2K trailer piqued my curiosity. The concept of a computer apocalypse at the turn of the millennium is an interesting twist on the classic disaster movie formula, and it seems to be embracing its retro aesthetic wholeheartedly.
It feels like just yesterday, but in reality, it’s been 24 years since we stepped into the new millennium, a time when many doomsday predictions were made, notably by Richard Madeley, who was often compared to the character Alan Partridge. Now, as we’ve moved well into the millennium by almost three decades, we can enjoy a bit of nostalgic humor with the release of the Y2K trailer, offering a retro blend of comedy and horror.
On New Year’s Eve 1999, I found myself as an insignificant high school student, preparing to gatecrash the grandest party marking the threshold of the new millennium. Little did we know that when the clock struck twelve, the evening would spiral into a madness beyond our wildest dreams. As electronic devices, some relics from the end of the 20th century, began to malfunction en masse, it seemed as though they were on a mission to wipe humanity off the face of the earth.
Kyle Mooney, who co-wrote the movie “Brigsby Bear”, is stepping into directing with this as his first feature film. The screenplay was co-written by him and Evan Winter. This intriguing film features Jaeden Martell (known for the “It” series), Rachel Zegler (from “West Side Story”), and Julian Dennison (famous from “Deadpool 2”). The storyline envisions a reality where the predicted computer crisis in the year 2000 actually occurred.
In the upcoming live-action adaptation of Snow White, Rachel Zegler steps into the lead role, replacing Jenna Ortega due to scheduling issues. The impressive cast includes Lachlan Watson, Mason Gooding, rapper The Kid Laroi, Tim Heidecker, Eduardo Franco, Miles Robbins, Fred Hechinger, and Daniel Zolghadri. Among this principal group, Mason Gooding and Eduardo Franco were alive during the movie’s timeline – Gooding was just 3 years old, while Franco was 5. Miles Robbins, portraying Nugz, was 7 at that time, and Daniel Zolghadri was born after the film’s events had taken place.
