Yakuza Kiwami Coming to Nintendo Switch This Year

As a longtime fan of the Yakuza series, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming release of Yakuza Kiwami on Nintendo Switch! For years, I’ve been playing these games on various Sony platforms, and now, finally, I’ll be able to take Kiryu’s epic journey with me wherever I go.

For the first time in over a decade, the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series by Sega is making its way onto a Nintendo platform. During today’s Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase, they announced that the game Yakuza Kiwami will be available on the Nintendo Switch. Originally released in 2016 as a remake of the initial game in the series, this could be an excellent chance for newcomers to the franchise to try out Yakuza Kiwami and enjoy it on a portable device, as there doesn’t appear to be any additional features planned at this time.

On October 24th, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll get my hands on “Yakuza Kiwami” on my beloved Nintendo Switch! The price is set at an affordable $19.99. If you’re as excited as me, check out the trailer for the Switch version right below!

It’s quite surprising that there are plans to release Yakuza Kiwami. Historically, Sega has viewed Yakuza/Like a Dragon as one of their main pillars, but the series has primarily stayed away from Nintendo systems. The first two games in the series were released on Wii U in 2013, but only within Japan. In a recent roundtable interview with outlets like IGN and GameSpot, RGG Studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama was asked about the potential for Yakuza on Switch. Yokoyama seemed hesitant, expressing doubts about whether the games would run smoothly on the Switch and referring to it as a system more suited for younger audiences.

It’s quite noticeable that Yokoyama and Sega have shifted their stance somewhat from their previous comments! The Nintendo Switch isn’t new to M-rated games, as series like Resident Evil, Metal Gear, and Grand Theft Auto have all graced its screen. In the past, Nintendo systems might have been seen as more child-friendly, but that image has definitely been shattered during the Switch era. Of course, there’s a strategic reason for this; the launch date for Yakuza Kiwami on Switch coincides with the premiere of Yakuza: Like a Dragon on Prime Video on October 24th.

It would be intriguing to discover if the release of ‘Yakuza Kiwami’ paves the way for further installments in the series on Nintendo systems. As suggested by Yokoyama, newer games in the series may struggle to run smoothly on the Switch, but Nintendo is working on a new system. If ‘Yakuza Kiwami’ performs strongly, it’s plausible we could see more ‘Yakuza’ games on the potential ‘Switch 2’!
