Yakuza Wars Leaks Ahead of Official Announcement

As a dedicated Yakuza fan with over two decades of immersion into the seedy underworld of Kamurocho and its surrounding districts, this latest leak has me both intrigued and apprehensive. The idea of exploring the strategic side of the Yakuza world is tantalizing, but the less-than-stellar art style leaves much to be desired. I’ve grown accustomed to Kazuma Kiryu’s rugged charm and Goro Majima’s quirky charisma, so it’s a bit jarring to see them looking… well, let’s just say they need a few more rounds in the ironing press.

A potential new installment in the prolonged Yakuza series might have accidentally surfaced before its formal unveiling, as a Facebook page for a game titled Yakuza Wars has been found. This game seems to be developed by BBGame together with Sega, and all indications point towards it being Chinese-exclusive, though there’s speculation it may be released internationally later on. A notable difference from previous games in the series is that Yakuza Wars appears to be a strategy game, but characters like Kazuma Kiryu, Ichiban Kasuga, and Goro Majima are expected to make an appearance.

To date, the response to the leaked images has predominantly been unfavorable. Many fans have speculated that the artwork for the game was generated by AI, and they’ve pointed out anomalies in the depictions of Kazuma and Goro as evidence. For instance, Kazuma is shown holding a cigarette against his chin instead of his lips, which seems unusual. Since Sega hasn’t officially acknowledged the game yet, some fans are secretly hoping it’s an unauthorized project, despite the fact that Sega’s logo appears prominently on the Facebook page. It’s worth noting that Sega did mention the potential for a Yakuza mobile game last year, so this development isn’t entirely unexpected.

It’s understandable that fans might not be thrilled, but releasing a Yakuza mobile game at this time seems strategic. With “Like a Dragon: Yakuza” premiering on Prime Video on October 24th, it provides an opportunity for mobile gamers to engage with the series after watching the show. Sega is likely viewing the television show as a means to broaden the franchise’s reach, and on October 24th, “Yakuza Kiwami” will debut on Nintendo Switch – marking the first time a game in the series has been made available on that platform. Let’s hope for an official announcement from Sega soon!
