Razor blades have finally left the Yankee Stadium…well, sort of.
The New York Yankees have recently revised an old rule about appearances. Now, team staff and players can sport neatly trimmed beards while playing on the field.

View Urgent ForecastHal Steinbrenner, the owner of the Major League Baseball team, publicly announced the news in an Instagram statement dated February 21st. In his post, he mentioned that he consulted with “many ex- and current Yankees from various eras” to gather their opinions on a longstanding dressing room policy.
As per a 55-year-old individual, the change in this policy, initially established by George Steinbrenner in 1976 (who was his late father and former owner), didn’t occur suddenly or swiftly.
In his post, he expressed gratitude for the sincere and diverse feedback they provided. He further mentioned that these discussions serve as a continuation of a long-standing internal dialogue that has been going on for several years.
As a decisive leader, I’ve pondered this matter thoroughly, and I’ve made up my mind. Moving forward, I’m going to adjust our expectations to accommodate the request for well-kept beards among our team players and uniformed personnel.
Hal affirmed that the present moment represents the optimal opportunity for the team, consisting of players ranging from the current Aaron Judge to retired Alex Rodriguez, to surpass their father’s old-fashioned policy and adopt a fresh approach. As reported by MLB’s official site, George’s regulations prohibited team members from sporting full beards and only allowed mustaches. This rule extended beyond just facial styling, as hair on the head was not permitted to grow below the collar.
Last year, Yankees player Devin Williams sparked a popular discussion about the connection between sports and facial hair, although it’s unclear what initially prompted this topic shift for him.
In December 2024, Williams was transferred to the New York team from the Milwaukee Brewers at age 30. He was pictured arriving at the team, sporting a mustache and some facial hair. More recently, he had shaved off his beard, but he’s now embracing the change since he liked the Instagram post announcing it.
