In some instances, it’s the untold stories of those who perish that carry the greatest impact. As Yellowjackets gears up for its eagerly awaited third season, co-showrunner Jonathan Lisco is shedding light on one of Season 2’s contentious moments: the demise of Natalie, played by Juliette Lewis. The startling ending saw a cherished character depart from the survival horror series’ intricate plotline, but as per Lisco, this tragic event was essential because it lends authenticity to the narrative’s outcomes.
In Lisco’s explanation to SFX, it was stressed that if the series is centered around trauma and its aftermath, there must indeed be repercussions. It wouldn’t make sense for there to be no repercussions if the experiences of the main characters don’t impact them in some significant ways.
He commented, “Whether it’s positive or negative, we want our valued viewers to grasp our presentation, for if it fails to stir their emotions or thoughts in some way, then what is the purpose of our show, as its essence lies in this very connection.
In the movie “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” Lewis, who acted alongside Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio, becomes the first adult member of the team to succumb to the psychological trauma and hidden past that haunts the remaining characters. This critical event takes place during a ceremony at a compound operated by Lottie as a supposed healing facility, with significant consequences for the upcoming storyline.
In the absence of Lewis, the show is filling the gap by bringing in fresh faces for its third season. Actors Hilary Swank and Joel McHale have been added to the cast, but their specific roles are not yet revealed. It’s rumored that Hilary Swank could take on a role as another survivor in the wilderness, which might add new challenges for the existing characters.
As a dedicated fan, I eagerly anticipate the return of Yellowjackets on February 14th. This captivating series intertwines various genres while delving into its distinctive dual timeline narrative. Yellowjackets chronicles the harrowing wilderness ordeal of a soccer team and the chilling repercussions they face 25 years later. The critically lauded show delves into the consequences when a resilient group of teenage soccer players are thrust into unthinkable situations after their plane crashes en route to a match.
Heading into Season 3, the 1996 storyline finds the survivors grappling with the ruthless winter cold following the burning down of their cabin. Coach Ben is emerging as a prime suspect for the arson, driven by despair and terror after witnessing the team’s descent into cannibalism in Season 2. The series draws comparisons to Lord of the Flies and Lost, exploring themes of survival and societal disintegration.
In making this narrative decision, “Yellowjackets” aligns itself with shows such as “The Walking Dead” and “Game of Thrones,” which were renowned for their boldness in writing off crucial characters. Yet, as Lisco points out, Natalie’s demise serves to intensify the tension in both the past and present narratives, underscoring the long-lasting effects of trauma. When the series debuts with a two-episode premiere on Paramount+ and Showtime, audiences will witness how this tragic event molds the survivors’ ongoing journey as their story unfolds.
Yellowjackets returns for Season 13 on Friday, February 14th.
