Yellowjackets S3 Finale: Mysteries Solved & Twists Revealed

In Season 3 of “Yellowjackets“, we see why this Showtime series continues to be an intriguing examination of trauma and the extremes humans will reach for survival. The Yellowjackets team, in the past, have constructed new lives in the Canadian wilderness, nurturing their twisted faith in the Wilderness spirit. In the present, the survivors grapple with Natalie’s (Juliette Lewis) demise as a new enigmatic character arises to disrupt the tranquility they fought for with blood. Both narratives reach their peak in Season 3’s finale, where several significant “Yellowjackets” mysteries are unraveled. Although Showtime hasn’t confirmed a fourth and final season yet, the last episode of Season 3 leaves fans with plenty to debate about over the next few years.

WARNING: Spoilers below for Yellowjackets Season 3, Episode 10

With the entirety of Season 3 of Yellowjackets now streaming on Paramount+, it’s time for us to dissect the mind-blowing plot twists that unfolded in the season finale!

Teen Lottie’s Connection to the Wilderness Is Shattered

In the final episode of the season, Akilah’s (Nia Sondaya) dreadful premonitions become a reality as all the animals within the enclosure mysteriously perish during the dead of night. Teen Lottie (Courtney Eaton) seizes this moment to persuade her fellow Yellowjackets that the wilderness is retaliating against them, necessitating another sacrificial ritual involving one of their own to propitiate the malevolent spirits lurking in the shadows.

It seems that Lottie has persuaded Akilah to pretend to poison animals and feign shock, all so the other girls would keep thinking that the Wilderness holds some sort of mystical power over them. Lottie is so deeply entrenched in her illusions that she’s prepared to stage a tragedy if it means she can continue as the spiritual guide among the survivors. This raises doubts about every other supposedly supernatural occurrence in Yellowjackets, as Lottie might be deliberately manufacturing evidence for her visions since the first season.

Unfortunately, only Akilah seems to possess the truth, as she disappears following a confrontation with Lottie within the cave and vows to no longer adhere to the disturbed visions of the Wilderness. Since we’re unaware of what became of Akilah, it’s reasonable to infer that Lottie might have taken drastic measures to eliminate her in order to protect both her secrets and power.

Who Is Pit Girl?

Following the tragic event where animals were hunted, the Yellowjackets team resolve that someone among them should be pursued, slain, and consumed. Teenager Taissa (Jasmin Savoy Brown) persuades Teen Van (Liv Hewson) to alter the card-drawing results so that Hannah (Ashley Sutton) gets the Queen of Hearts. In Taissa’s viewpoint, since Hannah is a stranger, it would be wiser to sacrifice the newcomer instead of one of their fellow teammates if someone must meet a tragic end.

While distributing cards, Teen Shauna (Sophie Nelisse) notices Tai attempting to manipulate the draw’s result. In response, Shauna swiftly adjusts her position in the circle to maintain fairness, leveraging her role as Antler Queen to impose her decision. Consequently, Mari (Alexa Barajas) picks up the Queen of Hearts instead of Hannah. Shauna is delighted because Mari has been one of the individuals testing her since the start of Yellowjackets Season 3.

In a snow-covered forest, Shauna adorns Mari with a heart pendant necklace and sets her on a path that leads to the woods. As the tribe dons masks and gives chase, Mari sheds her vibrant attire to camouflage against the surrounding snow. A chilling recognition strikes us as we notice Mari is clad in the identical white outfit reminiscent of Pit Girl from the first season of Yellowjackets. The tragic twist unfolds as Mari meets a similar fate as Pit Girl, tumbling into the treacherous pit trap built by Teen Trevor (Kevin Alves), intended to harm Lottie but ultimately failing. This ominous loop brings the season 3 finale in line with the initial narrative of Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets Teens Will Finally Be Rescued

As Shauna and the Yellowjackets are preoccupied with their hunting ceremony, Teen Natalie (Sophie Thatcher) teams up with Van and Teen Misty (Sammi Hanratty) to fix the satellite radio they discovered at Hannah’s camp. Instead of joining everyone else in chasing after Mari, Natalie takes the radio and leaves on her own. However, she is stopped by Hannah, who surprisingly extends a helping hand, despite her new role as an enforcer for Shauna.

The next day following Mari’s banquet, as customary, Shauna confronts Natalie to assert her dominance once more. In a panic, Shauna uncovers that Hannah is wearing Natalie’s garments. This deception gives Natalie the opportunity to ascend a mountain to enhance the reception and activate her satellite radio. As the Yellowjackets Season 3 draws to a close, we witness Natalie using the radio to request rescue. This implies that in Season 4, the Yellowjackets will be saved, effectively ending Shauna’s and Lottie’s reign of tyranny.

Who Killed Adult Lottie?

The current narrative also uncovers details about Adult Lottie’s (Simone Kessell) demise. While at Shauna’s (Melanie Lynskey) residence, Lottie pilfered the damning tape that Callie (Sarah Desjardins) had seized. Eager to recover the tape, Callie visits Lottie’s father’s apartment complex, where Lottie is hiding out. In the basement, Callie encounters Lottie, dressed in a white attire and praying in a self-made sanctuary illuminated by burning candles.

As a film enthusiast, I firmly believe that Callie is a child born of the wilderness, introduced to us as a surrogate for the baby Shauna who was lost in the woods decades ago. In my eyes, Shauna can’t embrace Callie because she harbors jealousy towards the untapped power within her own daughter. I find myself repeatedly tormenting Callie with my inflated speeches about how she embodies a dangerous, wild, and brutal spirit – a trait that Shauna will never accept in her. In a moment of uncontrollable anger, Callie shoves me from the top of the stairs, unintentionally taking my life. This tragic event explains why Lottie’s fingernail residue matched Shauna’s DNA – a shared genetic connection between mothers and daughters. With a heavy heart, Callie grabs the stolen tape and flees, choosing to keep the chilling secret of her actions concealed.

The Yellowjackets Are Unleashed in the Present Timeline

In the gripping ninth episode of Season 3, following Van’s (Lauren Ambrose) heartbreaking demise in Yellowjackets, I, Taissa (Tawny Cypress), find myself at a crossroads. I decide to honor her memory by burying her in the wilderness. As I prepare to lay her to rest, I make a solemn vow – I will no longer deny or suppress my darker self, but embrace it instead. With a knife in hand, I take a grim and somber step, carving a small token from Van’s body as a macabre tribute. This grisly act is a testament to the lengths I am willing to go to avenge her and reclaim control over my own body, which has been entangled with my darker nature throughout Season 3 of Yellowjackets.

In a similar vein, Shauna too chooses to accept her authentic self. Upon learning about Lottie’s demise, Jeff (Warren Kole) decides to flee with Callie, recognizing that Shauna’s influence has tainted his family. Jeff understands that it was Shauna’s most sinister instincts that drove Callie to commit murder, and he pledges to shield his daughter from any more danger. Shauna discovers a letter from Melissa (Hilary Swank) in her kitchen, sealed with tape, which confirms there was no one hunting Shauna during Yellowjackets Season 3. Melissa’s assumptions were correct, and Shauna is the true antagonist in this narrative. Facing this harsh reality, Shauna acknowledges that she enjoyed her time in the wilderness, but life has grown dull since then. To break free, she must accept her monstrous nature.

In another part of town, Taissa and Christina Ricci’s character, Misty, gather for a conversation centered around Shauna. Taissa emphatically points out that Shauna is culpable for Van’s demise, as she consistently creates turmoil in their lives. Shauna has also been the source of all past troubles – such as Natalie’s death and the yellowjackets being targeted by a blackmail plot. Taissa believes Shauna won’t cease until she’s the only survivor left, so they must eliminate her first. Misty concurs, forming a sinister alliance with Taissa and vowing to assist in bringing down Shauna. The stage is set for confrontation, as Yellowjackets Season 4 sets all survivors against each other.
