Yellowjackets Season 3 Reveals Hilarious Truth Behind Creepy Screeches!

Yellowjackets skillfully blends supernatural elements with psychological terror since its inception, keeping viewers guessing between reality and the survivors’ traumatized imaginations. In Season 3, one of the most disconcerting enigmas emerged during the summer solstice celebration in the premiere episode, as eerie, otherworldly shrieks disrupted the festivities. These spine-tingling cries resurfaced multiple times throughout the season, notably during Travis’ (Kevin Alves) drug trip in Episode 2, Akhila’s (Nia Sondaya) cave hallucinations in Episode 3, and most dramatically during Coach Ben Scott’s (Steven Krueger) cannibalistic feast in Episode 6. Each instance reinforced the idea of an ancient, malevolent entity lurking in the wilderness, especially when Lottie (Courtney Eaton) appeared to converse with it. However, Episode 7 reveals the source of these unsettling cries, and the answer is surprisingly ordinary – yet hilariously unexpected – compared to fans’ expectations.

WARNING: Spoilers below for Yellowjackets Season 3, Episode 7

The story behind the eerie noises is revealed as new characters, biologists Edwin (Nelson Franklin) and Hanna (Ashley Sutton), make an appearance. They’ve journeyed into the Canadian wilderness for scientific studies, accompanied by a skilled wilderness guide (Joel McHale). During their expedition, they stumbled upon the Yellowjackets’ camp following the distressing events of Ben’s demise. Prior to their unexpected encounter with the teenage survivors, Edwin and Hanna were diligently studying their main research subject – the Arctic Banshee Frog.

In a fascinating adaptation to Canada’s rugged wilderness, this uncommon and imaginary amphibian species boasts an exceptional life cycle. Scientists reveal that these frogs undergo a kind of hibernation for about seven years, essentially freezing in place until changes in their surroundings rouse them from their slumber. Interestingly enough, it’s these frogs that have been producing the spine-tingling shrieks the Yellowjackets have been hearing.

Yellowjackets Season 3 Screeches Favor Reason Instead of Belief

The Arctic Banshee Frogs are unique due to their unusual mating rituals. Upon thawing from their winter slumber, these frogs initiate an intense mating period characterized by loud vocalizations reverberating throughout the woods. These calls, which have given them the name “Banshee”, have been known to frighten Yellowjackets. The timing of their emergence aligns with the team’s summer activities, making it no surprise that survivors started hearing these sounds a few months after the crash. This insight serves as an excellent illustration of the series’ style, skillfully blending supernatural elements with rational explanations that the characters perceive through their superstitious perspective.

Over three seasons of “Yellowjackets”, we’ve seen the survivors create an intricate belief system around the “Wilderness” being a conscious and demanding force. Lottie’s understanding of frog calls as divine messages highlights how, when isolated from mainstream society and scientific understanding, people can attribute deep significance to ordinary events. It’s crucial to keep in mind that the logical explanation for the noises doesn’t lessen their influence on the survivors’ mental state. No matter where they came from, these noises served as a trigger for their slide into tribalism.

Surprisingly, what seemed ominous and terrifying in Episode 7 turned out to be merely a comical situation – the Yellowjackets had been startled by the loud calls of amorous frogs instead of some hidden menacing force lurking in the woods.

New Yellowjackets Season 3 episodes premiere Fridays on Paramount+.
