The enigma surrounding the Man with No Eyes in the series Yellowjackets has drawn a lot of attention, leaving viewers curious. This eerie character initially appeared to Taissa Turner (portrayed by Jasmin Savoy Brown and Tawny Cypress) during her grandmother’s demise, following her from childhood, through survival in the wilderness, and into her adult life as a potential politician. What sets the Man with No Eyes apart is that his presence seems to predate the infamous plane crash, hinting at some supernatural power active in the Canadian wilderness before Taissa found herself stranded there. In the third episode of Yellowjackets Season 3, titled “Them’s The Breaks,” the origin of this frightening figure is unexpectedly unveiled, but immediately raises questions about its authenticity.
WARNING: Spoilers below for Yellowjackets Season 3, Episode 3
During a quiet, shared evening, adult Taissa and Van (Lauren Ambrose) are watching vintage “Pee Wee’s Playhouse” VHS tapes, enjoying their peaceful home setting. However, this tranquility is disrupted when an ad for Ozzie’s Homemade Ice Cream Parlor appears during a commercial break. In this advertisement, the Man with No Eyes (Brody Logan Romhanyi) is seen enjoying ice cream, but there’s a twist: his empty eye sockets are filled with cartoon eyes that jump out, highlighting how delicious the ice cream is. This sight sends Taissa into a state of fear, as she recognizes this figure as the source of her lifelong dread. When Van confirms she can see the man too, Taissa understands that this isn’t a hallucination but rather the root cause of her trauma: a childhood commercial that her young mind had transformed into something menacing following her grandmother’s passing.
During the climax of the episode, Coach Ben’s (Steven Krueger) cave system’s supposed explanation falls apart. After encountering poisonous gas, Teen Van (Liv Hewson), Shauna (Sophie Nélisse), and Akhila (Nia Sondaya) become trapped in a shared nightmare. They awaken in a bizarre classroom where Lottie (Courtney Eaton) acts as their teacher, writing unsettling messages about death on the chalkboard. As they grapple with figuring out whose dream this is, the Man with No Eyes emerges, pushing a cart down the school’s hallway while staring into their classroom. This entire sequence raises concerning questions regarding the Man with No Eyes, as Taissa’s absence prevents her past traumas from providing an explanation for his presence in this collective hallucination.
Yellowjackets’ Explanation for the Man With No Eyes Is a Clear Misdirection
In Episode 3, the “Man with No Eyes” plotline exemplifies the unique way that Yellowjackets handles its supernatural aspects. Initially, the ice cream commercial is presented as a logical basis for Taissa’s visions, offering an explanation many viewers have been waiting for. Yet, the shared dream sequence suggests there might be more to this entity than just Taissa’s personal trauma, leaving the enigma surrounding it unresolved and intriguing.
The method used in the storytelling of “Yellowjackets” – providing logical reasons alongside mysterious occurrences – has kept its enigmatic, suspenseful ambiance captivating. Just like Lottie’s visions can be chalked up to schizophrenia or genuine psychic powers, and the forest being either cursed or merely dangerous, the Man with No Eyes remains elusive in classification. The show effectively employs this ambiguity to heighten its horror aspects, as fear multiplies when viewers cannot easily dismiss such events as ordinary.
Despite Yellowjackets’ reluctance to clarify the identity of the Man with No Eyes, this evasiveness is becoming increasingly frustrating. Although keeping elements shrouded in mystery can heighten intrigue, repeatedly introducing major revelations and then dismissing them creates a sense of stagnation rather than progress in the narrative. The ice cream commercial had the potential to contribute significantly to the puzzle, but instead, it becomes another roadblock in the series’ growing list of unresolved questions. If Yellowjackets aims to sustain audience interest in its central enigmas, it needs to begin offering tangible answers along with thoughtfully constructed new puzzles.
