Fans are eagerly anticipating the premiere of Yellowjackets Season 3 on Valentine’s Day, as they ponder over the many mysteries that the Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated series presents. One of the most intriguing enigmas centers around a character referred to as the Man with No Eyes or the No-Eyed Man, who is closely linked to Taissa Turner, played by Jasmin Savoy Brown and Tawny Cypress. So far, this elusive figure has only been seen by Taissa and her grandmother, Nana Bassey. The final moments of the Yellowjackets Season 3 trailer hint that he will reappear, potentially revealing some answers to the lingering questions surrounding him.
We’ve learned that the character known as the Man with No Eyes was introduced in Season 1, Episode 3 of Yellowjackets, titled “The Dollhouse.” In this episode, a young Taissa comes face-to-face with this eerie figure for the first time. She is with her unwell grandmother, Nana Bassey, who appears to be conversing with someone in a mirror. Taissa initially assumes that her grandmother might be seeing an angel, remembering their conversation about souls being called back to heaven upon death. However, it turns out that the dying woman was not communicating with an angel but rather the Man with No Eyes. During this encounter, young Taissa sees him reflected in the mirror as Nana Bassey shouts a warning, “Don’t let him take my eyes!
At a later point, we discover that Taissa occasionally has dreams or visions of a man without eyes while sleepwalking. During one such instance, adolescent Van (Liv Hewson) accompanies adolescent Taissa (Brown). When she inquires about how Taissa knows her way, the sleepwalking Taissa mentions that the figureless man guides her. She further explains that she obeys this figure when it allows her to do so.
When fully awake, Van shares with Taissa what transpired during the incident, including their guidance towards a tree adorned with a specific symbol. This revelation distresses Taissa, although she maintains ignorance about the identity of the man without eyes.
In a later event, Taissa encounters her adult counterpart once more during a public speech outside her home, where she decides to persist in her bid for New Jersey state senator despite an earlier agreement with Simone (Rukiya Bernard) to withdraw. This encounter raises concern for Taissa’s wife, as the words “SPILL” are ominously painted in red on their front door, adding to the strain that the campaign has placed on their family. Subsequently, Taissa wins the election, and it is speculated that her other self may have played a role by constructing a shrine and carrying out a ritual involving Taissa’s deceased dog, which she had killed. Taissa had long been apprehensive about this darker aspect of herself, as she struggled to stay vigilant each night, only to be haunted further by recurring visions of the Man with No Eyes and her other persona.
Tawny Cypress and Showrunner Ashley Lyle on the No-Eyed Man
During an interview with Elle magazine in April 2023, Cypress discussed collaborating with the enigmatic character, The Man with No Eyes, who was played by Brahm Taylor in Season 1 and Brody Romhanyi in Season 2. Cypress found this character equally chilling off-screen as on, describing him as “just as intimidating in real life.”
In my perspective, he dons this facial prosthesis, and let me tell you, he towers an astonishing eight feet! Yes, he’s aware of the eerie vibe he gives off, yet he embraces it wholeheartedly. In fact, he adores it passionately. He absolutely loves being this larger-than-life character.
When inquired about her understanding of the enigmatic character, the Man with No Eyes, Cypress openly acknowledged back then that she was just as clueless as the viewers were about the character. “I know no more than the audience does,” the actress explained. “I know she’s been encountering him since her childhood. The puzzling aspects regarding Taissa, which everyone is curious about, are yet to be resolved until at least Season 3. She seems to be a character for the long haul.
At PaleyFest 2023, Ashley Lyle, a co-showrunner of “Yellowjackets”, shared additional details concerning the character known as the Man with No Eyes during a question and answer session (according to Business Insider).
Lyle stated, “Regarding the Man with No Eyes, I’ll only add that in the initial season, we discover Tai has structured her existence around practicality. From my perspective, she might identify as an atheist or agnostic. However, as a young girl, she had a deeply informative and traumatic encounter with her beloved grandmother who was near death. During this time, she experienced a terrifying premonition of the afterlife, unlike what she had been expecting – angels and trumpets. Instead, she encountered something dreadful.
Lyle went on to discuss topics such as near-death experiences, focusing particularly on accounts from hospice nurses and final moments experienced by people. He explained that he’s spent countless nights pondering these subjects because they can be quite unsettling. He believes that for a character like Taissa, who is disconnected from her spiritual side and lacks faith, the symbolic figure of this particular character could represent death itself.
Lyle mentioned, “I believe he embodies ‘the mysterious’ or ‘the unknown,’ which makes Taissa’s character quite uneasy. We plan to delve deeper into this aspect.
You can currently stream the initial two seasons of “Yellowjackets” on Paramount+, which also offers Showtime content. The third season is set to debut on Friday, February 14th.
