Yellowstone fans react as Kevin Costner’s fate is confirmed – director explains shocking twist

As a long-time fan of Kevin Costner and the captivating world of Yellowstone, I must admit that the sudden and tragic demise of John Dutton in season 5 part 2 left me stunned. The initial shock was almost unbearable, reminiscent of the time I lost my favorite pair of jeans to a rogue washing machine.

*Warning: Yellowstone spoilers ahead!*

In simpler terms, it’s been verified that Kevin Costner’s character from Yellowstone’s fifth season, part 2, experiences an unfortunate and grim demise, which is disappointing news for fans who adore him.

For a while now, there’s been a lot of talk and guesswork about John Costner’s role in western dramas, particularly Yellowstone. However, earlier this year, he cleared up all the doubts by sharing on social media that he had finished working on Yellowstone and would be focusing his attention on his Horizon film series instead.

Regardless, some enthusiasts continued to anticipate a guest appearance or, at minimum, were curious about the future of Kevin Costner’s character, John Dutton, in season 5 part 2. However, this is not the reality!

In a surprising turn of events, screenwriter Taylor Sheridan chose to unveil the truth instead of keeping it hidden: John was deceased and Sarah Atwood (portrayed by Dawn Olivieri) had meticulously arranged his murder, even commanding the assassin to stage the scene to mimic suicide.

In an exclusive chat with The Hollywood Reporter, I, as a dedicated viewer, was left astonished by showrunner Taylor Sheridan’s unexpected move: unveiling all these intriguing secrets right from the opening episode of Yellowstone’s season 5 part 2.

As a film enthusiast, I find that the intrigue in life’s milestones – birth and death – lies not in the events themselves, but in their impact on our human experiences. This perspective, I believe, served as the foundation for crafting the narrative in this particular tale.

As a curious cinephile, I pondered, “What strategies do others employ to endure, and how do they spend their time?” This question sparked my intrigue, ignited the unfolding of the enigma, and set the stage for the captivating tale that was about to unroll.

As a movie buff, I’d express it this way: Right from the start, I found it brilliantly intriguing that they chose to keep me guessing about the rest of the story, just like I was when I first read the scripts. The effect is that the audience is plunged into complete darkness about what’s to come in subsequent episodes.

Nonetheless, some social media users were displeased by the twist, feeling that John’s story needed a more heroic conclusion instead of the one he received.

John Dutton deserved to go out like a gladiator, not a victim. Completely undoes the series. I’m not a fan at all how #Yellowstone handled Costner’s departure.

Remarkably, many of the most critical responses to the episode surfaced within the initial five minutes, prior to the revelation that John hadn’t taken his own life, but instead became the target of a planned assassination.

Raise your hand if you were traumatized in the first 5 minutes of Yellowstone!!#yellowstone

Others, on the other hand, showed their eagerness to find out how the story unfolds next, hinting that John’s family may be on a quest for answers and retribution following his unexpected passing.

And this is why I watch, to see Beth and RIP get revenge. #Yellowstonetv #Yellowstone
