What you need to know

  • Announced last month, Microsoft’s new Surface Keyboard for desktop PCs is now available.
  • The keyboard features the new Copilot AI key and Windows 11 shortcuts to apps like Snip & Sketch, Widgets, and Emoji.
  • It’s a minor refresh over the older $89 Surface Keyboard for desktops, but now costs an eye-watering $129.

As a seasoned tech analyst with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen countless gadget releases that left me scratching my head and questioning their value proposition. Microsoft’s new Surface Keyboard for desktop PCs is no exception.

The recently launched Microsoft Surface Keyboard for desktop computers can now be bought from the Microsoft Store. Compared to its predecessor, this new keyboard boasts several minor adjustments such as an innovative Copilot key, quick access shortcuts for utilizing Windows 11 functionalities like Snip & Sketch, Widgets, call muting, and a dedicated Emoji panel.

It’s rather surprising to note that the latest Surface Keyboard, known as the 2nd Edition, comes with a significantly higher price tag compared to its predecessor. You can still purchase the older version for approximately $99 from Microsoft, but the new one retails at a steep $129. For an extra $30, it seems you’ll only be getting new key shortcuts.

Glancing at the specifications chart, it appears that the latest Surface Keyboard hasn’t undergone significant alterations. It still functions with Bluetooth 4.0 LE, promises a battery life of up to one year on two AA batteries, and maintains the same dimensions as its predecessor. Moreover, it has the same weight, implying that no internal changes have been made either.

It’s not all bad news though. The Surface Keyboard actually is one of the more premium wireless keyboards on the market, giving the Apple Magic Keyboard for Mac a run for its money. It features metal chassis that’s premium and cold to the touch, along with quiet keys that also have deep travel. Unfortunately, it doesn’t feature a backlight, something that I think really should be included at this price point.

Over the past year, Microsoft significantly reduced its range of Surface PC accessories, keeping only a handful of items that harmonize with their Surface Pro and Surface Laptop series. Among the few Surface accessories still available are the Desktop Surface Keyboard, the Surface Arc Mouse, and the Surface Dock.
