Marvel Studios has unveiled the initial trailer for their upcoming movie titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“, and it’s causing quite a stir among fans. This film represents the first appearance of the Fantastic Four within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and based on this sneak peek, it seems to be the most accurate portrayal yet of Marvel’s iconic family. The cinematic journey of the Fantastic Four has had its ups and downs, to put it mildly. The 1994 film produced by Roger Corman was far too cheesy and low-budget for comic book fans (though locating a copy is challenging since it wasn’t officially released). The films directed by Tim Story in 2005 and 2007 managed to capture some aspects of the characters, but they’ve lost their luster over time. As for Josh Trank’s Fant4stic, it’s best not to dwell on it.
One key aspect that stands out from the Fantastic Four: First Steps trailer is the intriguing sneak peek of the iconic villain, Galactus. Previous portrayals of the character, such as in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, were met with disappointment due to a less-than-impressive representation as a giant space cloud. Ever since then, fans have been eagerly anticipating an authentic comic book version of Galactus. Although the teaser only provides a brief glimpse, it suggests that Marvel Studios might have finally nailed the Devourer of Worlds. The visual accuracy is significant, but how the film handles Galactus’ immense presence will significantly impact fan reactions to this new interpretation. Interestingly, Marvel Comics has already suggested a method for defeating Galactus, which could potentially be useful knowledge for the Fantastic Four to consider.
For people new to Marvel Comics lore, Galactus is a formidable cosmic entity, among the mightiest in the universe. He was brought to life by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, debuting in 1966’s Fantastic Four #48 as part of the renowned “Galactus Trilogy” storyline. Unlike many common villains, Galactus isn’t inherently evil; he consumes entire planets to survive, but not out of malice. Instead, he functions more like a force of nature than an antagonist per se. Typically, his arrival is heralded by his messenger, the Silver Surfer (who will feature in First Steps as Shalla-Bal). Over time, Galactus has engaged in battles with almost every major hero, but his most frequent foes have been the Fantastic Four.
In simpler terms, the comic book “Marvel Team-Up” #137, published in 1983, provides an unexpectedly easy way to challenge Galactus. Instead of being a formidable adversary, Galactus is shown as weakened and seeking help from Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four due to running low on energy. Unfortunately for him, he can’t find Reed and ends up encountering his young son Franklin at a circus. Seeing Franklin’s potential power, Galactus attempts to make him his new herald to sustain himself, but inadvertently transforms Aunt May into another herald, whom they call Golden Oldie.
In an attempt to quell Galactus’ insatiable appetite, Franklin presents him with a Twinkie, or as you might know it, a Hostess snack. Interestingly enough, in the comic, these treats are referred to as Twinkles, but we all understand what they symbolize. To everyone’s surprise, Galactus not only finds that the Twinkle replenishes his energy levels, but he also enjoys its taste. However, given that Galactus is known as the Devourer of Worlds, a single pack of “Twinkles” was never going to be sufficient. This leads Golden Oldie, with her newly acquired abilities, on a galactic quest for more sustenance and she eventually discovers a planet-sized snack which he quickly consumes. Naturally, after devouring such a large pastry, Galactus returns to Earth seeking a glass of milk.
If this scenario seems unbelievable to you, take comfort in knowing it’s merely a fantasy conjured by Peter Parker. Similarly, if that idea is hard to swallow, remember it’s a dream that Marvel Comics editor Danny Fingeroth imagined. In the same vein, if you find that implausible, be assured that Danny’s dream was just a figment of another editor’s imagination. And lastly, if that seems too far-fetched, know that it is simply a dream that the Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics had in their sleep.
Indeed, it’s all a series of dreams within dreams, making the absurdity of using a spongecake filled with whipped cream to appease Galactus quite clear. However, even though the comic may not strictly adhere to the canon, there hasn’t been any definitive evidence disproving the notion that a Twinkie could potentially hold off Galactus. Given this uncertainty, it would be prudent for the Fantastic Four to maintain a supply of Twinkies just in case such an outlandish situation arises.
