The second season finale of marks a record-breaking turn for the hit video game adaptation.
According to reports, The Last of Us’ second season finale surpassed the 90 million viewer mark in total for the series, with a whopping 37 million viewers tuning in since its premiere on April 13. The Season 2 finale attracted approximately 3.7 million viewers, although opinions were split among viewers regarding the final episode of the season.
In 2023, the television adaptation of the popular Naughty Dog video game franchise titled “The Last of Us” debuted, joining a limited number of successful video game adaptations. The show centers around Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, who portray Joel, a middle-aged man, and Ellie, a teenage girl, respectively. These characters form an unusual alliance in a hazardous post-apocalyptic landscape overrun by a fungal infection turning humans into zombies. Interestingly, the first season of the series adapts the storyline from the original game, while the subsequent events depicted are based on the 2020 sequel to the game.
The Last of Us Season 2 Has Polarized Fans
In the aftermath of The Last of Us Season 2, I found myself deeply immersed in the consequences of Joel’s actions from Season 1 – his fateful decision to protect Ellie by taking down a group of Fireflies who intended to use her for creating a cure. After the season finale aired, I joined countless others in sharing my thoughts on the episode. Some were overjoyed at the prospect of more stories to come, while others lamented it as “the most disappointing season finale imaginable.
Regarding the transition from Ellie’s perspective to Abby’s in the game, Druckmann explained that this shift was intentionally dramatic as it sets the stage for the promises made to the audience about the direction of the story. He further stated that if the season had ended a few moments earlier, they wouldn’t have been delivering on what the story is truly about. Druckmann went on to say that the following season will feature an epic narrative, while emphasizing that Abby’s story will be crucial in understanding Joel and Ellie’s journey up until now.
The Last of Us is currently available for streaming on HBO Max.
