One intriguing aspect of the introductory scroll in “The Empire Strikes Back” seems even more peculiar following season 2 of “Andor.” Among the top-tier Star Wars films, it’s hard to find one that surpasses “The Empire Strikes Back.” While opinions vary regarding favorites, many concur that the second film in the Star Wars series remains the franchise’s strongest to date.

It is uncertain if any future Star Wars films will surpass the greatness of The Empire Strikes Back, given its enduring impact and exceptional status as a sequel to A New Hope and a part of the larger saga. Although each film in the series has its own unique place, connections can be made, such as the intriguing reference to Andor season 2’s ending in the opening crawl of The Empire Strikes Back.

Andor Season 2 Shows How Important Yavin 4 Was To The Rebellion

Yavin Was The Headquarters Of The Rebel Alliance

In the first and second seasons of the series named ‘Andor’, we witnessed the creation of the Rebel Alliance, which started approximately five years prior to ‘A New Hope’. The second season particularly delved deeper into this period, guiding viewers straight towards the events depicted in ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’, a film that transpires only a few days before ‘A New Hope’. Thus, the origins of the Rebel Alliance and their primary base, Yavin 4, were portrayed more vividly during this season.

In Andor season 2, Yavin took on significant significance. The initial scenes revealed how the main character discovered the moon, while later storylines followed a group of rebels traveling across the galaxy towards Yavin. Characters such as Mon Mothma, Bail Organa, Luthen Rael, and Cassian Andor himself emphasized Yavin’s importance throughout Andor season 2, with the show doing so to prepare for A New Hope. This plot development fits well given that Yavin 4 played a crucial role in the Rebellion’s early battles against the Empire.

The Opening Crawl Of The Empire Strikes Back Removes Yavin’s Importance

Yavin Is No More

As a die-hard Star Wars fan, let me share my thoughts about “The Empire Strikes Back” and its opening text crawl. You might remember the initial lines revealing the Empire had routed the Rebel Alliance from their secret base following the Death Star’s destruction. Although I’ve always been aware of this in the Star Wars universe, it wasn’t until recently that I fully grasped the implication: Yavin 4 becomes insignificant after “A New Hope.” In fact, you won’t find Yavin 4 mentioned or shown in any of the subsequent movies from the original trilogy, and not even its name is mentioned in the opening crawl of “The Empire Strikes Back.

Although the Battle of Yavin plays a crucial role in the Star Wars saga, with shows like Andor, Rogue One, and Star Wars Rebels emphasizing its significance, the planet Yavin becomes less prominent from The Empire Strikes Back onwards. This shift feels somewhat abrupt and unusual given that the Empire had discovered it as a Rebel base in A New Hope. However, it’s important to note that the emphasis placed on Yavin in Star Wars content since 1980 might be why its absence in The Empire Strikes Back seems so unceremonious.

The Rebels Planned Hoth To Be The Yavin Replacement – But It Didn’t Work Out

Thanks To The Empire

Indeed, following their departure from Yavin 4, the Rebel Alliance intended to establish Hoth as their permanent headquarters. However, it turned out to be quite challenging for them to set up operations there. As depicted in the opening scene of The Empire Strikes Back, the Rebels’ base on Hoth was not yet operational when the Empire discovered it. Darth Vader’s probe droids located Hoth, prompting another attack by the Empire against the Rebel Alliance, forcing them to abandon the planet in a hurry. All of this fits neatly within the Star Wars timeline, but I must admit that I was surprised to recall that a significant Rebellion planet was only briefly mentioned at the start of The Empire Strikes Back.
