The movie “Run” from 2020, an underestimated thriller that showcases one of Sarah Paulson‘s finest performances, has recently topped the streaming charts on Hulu. This unexpected success occurred five years after its initial release. Other popular titles currently listed below include “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation”, “The Last Showgirl”, and two films from the “Kingsman” series.

Starring Paulson and Keira Allen, the film Run emulates the narrative style of Alfred Hitchcock, a renowned master of suspense who was instrumental in creating psychological thrillers. With its “mother knows best” plotline, Run incorporates numerous genre conventions. Clocking in at 90 minutes, this film offers a nerve-wracking viewing experience that challenges the boundaries of what can be shown when portraying the ominous aspects of motherhood. The story delves into some seriously dark territory and may prompt you to revisit the real-life case of Gypsy-Rose Blanchard.

The movie centers around a teenage girl named Chloe who gets around using a wheelchair at home. Her arrival in the world was apparently difficult, leading to a life filled with regular medication and homeschooling. Chloe’s mother, Diane, is extremely devoted to her care, but Chloe starts suspecting something is amiss when she notices discrepancies in her medication containers. As she delves deeper, Chloe discovers that her mother might be hiding important details about her health condition from her. When Chloe challenges Diane about it, a harrowing ordeal ensues for the young girl, as suggested by the film’s synopsis.

Chloe, a young girl reliant on a wheelchair, receives home education from her mom, Diane. As the days pass, Chloe starts to grow wary of Diane, harboring suspicions that there might be a hidden, ominous truth in her life.

As a movie enthusiast, I couldn’t wait to catch “Run” at the cinema, but sadly, COVID-19 disrupted those plans as it was initially slated for a theatrical premiere. When the entire film industry shifted gears and rescheduled releases, Hulu stepped in to stream the film instead. To my delight, “Run” shattered records on their platform, becoming one of their most popular original movies to date.

The response from critics was overwhelmingly favorable, with numerous individuals commending Paulson’s portrayal of the villain in a realm outside the American Horror Story universe. Similarly, Allen, who is actually wheelchair-bound in real life, garnered widespread critical acclaim for his performance as well. Currently, Run boasts an impressive 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The ‘Searching’ Cinematic Universe

The movie titled “Run” was helmed by Aneesh Chaganty who co-wrote its script with Sev Ohanian. This dynamic duo had previously collaborated on the screenlife thriller “Searching“. After the release of “Run“, they chose to expand their cinematic world. Not only is “Run” set in the same universe as “Searching“, but the sequel to “Searching“, titled “Missing“, starring Storm Reid, is also part of this series.

The three narratives may seem unrelated at first glance, yet they share subtle links. Each film presents a distinct narrative, ranging from tone to genre, but in the movie “Run,” there’s an evident connection through a news report that features David and Margot Kim, characters from the story “Searching.” Moreover, “Missing” hints at Diane’s institutionalization and her eventual escape.
