After the series finale of NCIS: Hawai’i, it seems Jane Tennant’s squad continues their adventures in some form or another. With the sudden cancellation of the show by CBS following its third season, fans were left with a cliffhanger and a sense of disappointment. Nevertheless, subtle hints scattered across the broader NCIS universe suggest possible continuations for the characters post-NCIS: Hawai’i.

Although the series finale left some questions unanswered about Tennant’s children and various plots in NCIS: Hawai’i, all the characters in the show were actively engaged as agents by the end, indicating they haven’t slowed down. This implies there’s a chance they might continue working together, but their motivations could vary. Therefore, these characters have an open-ended future beyond the series cancellation, although some possibilities are more definite than others.

6. Jane Tennant

Tennant Continues Leading Her Team

One clear indication of where Jane Tennant has been since the cancellation of NCIS: Hawaii in its season 3, is that we’ve gotten several clues about her life, with one significant hint being dropped in NCIS season 22. In episode 13, “Bad Blood,” it was shown that Tennant was among the characters from the NCIS universe who supported McGee’s children’s fundraiser for the office by buying coffee. This act suggests that Tennant remains an active agent within the NCIS team, working diligently to safeguard her community despite NCIS: Hawaii no longer being on the air.

In a surprising turn of events, I got a glimpse into Tennant’s future through LL Cool J’s character, Sam Hanna, during the 18th episode of NCIS season 22. In this particular episode, Hanna shared some homemade pastries he had baked using one of Tennant’s recipes. The intriguing twist was when Hanna playfully suggested that Tennant bakes to maintain harmony with her children. This not only implied that her kids were safe following the dramatic finale of NCIS: Hawai’i, but also hinted at a warm and enduring bond between Tennant and her family, even amidst challenging situations.

The continued presence of Tennant with her NCIS team following the series finale underscores her loyalty towards her team and community. Throughout her tenure, she has proven to be an exceptional leader, but her choice to carry on working there after the enigmatic finale and potential risks to her family highlights her unwavering devotion. Though we may never learn what the finale was going to disclose, the knowledge that Jane remains with her team in a constructive manner almost justifies the ending’s intrigue. It is hard to imagine an NCIS: Hawai’i squad without Tennant at its helm.

5. Kai Holman

Holman Stayed In Hawai’i Because Of His Family

The enigma surrounding Holman’s future, post the finale of NCIS: Hawaii, deepens slightly because the cliffhanger didn’t affect him personally. However, delving into season 1 of NCIS: Hawaii, we discover that Holman holds his family in high regard. His father was a recurring figure in the first season, and it was disclosed that their bond weakened following his mother’s demise, with Holman joining the Marine Corps. Fortunately, they rekindled their relationship when Holman returned to Hawaii to care for him.

Given that his father is the sole family member he knows, it seems unlikely that Holman would relocate again. His father has not been seen since season 1, yet his presence in the show signifies a significant role in Holman’s life. Consequently, Holman likely continues to be an active part of the NCIS: Hawai’i team, ensuring he stays near his father. Although Holman is the most recent addition to the team, he has demonstrated over time that he is a skilled agent.

4. Jesse Boone

Boone Could Have Pursued Detective Work Again

Jesse Boone plays an exceptional role as an agent on NCIS: Hawai’i, collaborating effectively with his team and particularly with Tennant in apprehending suspects. Among all characters, Boone seems the most likely to depart the show post-series finale. Previously, Boone was a detective in Washington, D.C., and frequently employs the skills he acquired during that time to aid him as a Special Agent. Given his background, it’s plausible that Boone might yearn for a return to detective work.

From the moment I first laid eyes on Boone in the captivating world of NCIS: Hawai’i, it was evident that he was an unforgettable character. The thought of him parting ways with this exceptional team seems almost surreal, yet it’s hard to deny the allure of his former career. He could have opted to continue his detective journey in the enchanting landscapes of Hawai’i or chosen to return to Washington and rekindle his past profession.

However, considering Boone’s deep-rooted attachment to Hawai’i and his family’s well-being, such a move feels unusual. But when it comes to speculating about the likelihood of his exit, I must admit that it seems the most plausible, given the weight of his past career.

3. Lucy Tara

Tara Could Have Stayed To Be With Whistler

In the TV series NCIS: Hawai’i, Lucy Tara’s romantic situation appears to have become more clear-cut. Throughout the show, she has been developing her relationship with her colleague, Kate Whistler. They initially started dating in season 1 but have faced numerous issues throughout the seasons, leading to splits and reconciliations. However, by season 3, it seemed like they had reached a stable point. Given their relationship’s progression, there is a strong chance that Tara chose to remain after the series finale to continue her romance with Whistler.

In an interview with TV Insider, actress Yasmine Al-Bustami, who portrays Tara, expressed her wish for Tara and Whistler’s relationship to deepen further. During a more substantial chat between the characters, they touched on the subject of marriage and weddings. Interestingly, Tara admitted that she had never envisioned herself getting married. However, Al-Bustami hinted that character Kate might persuade Tara to reconsider this perspective, stating, “I think Kate could potentially… encourage her to consider the idea of a wedding more seriously.” You can find the complete quote below.

What intrigues me is the potential for further discussion among our writers about this topic, since in their initial dialogue they didn’t delve too deeply, but hinted at each character’s unique perspective. Given their individual viewpoints, I suspect that Kate might be more open to the idea of having a wedding, with her family being supportive. However, it seems there could be an opportunity for Lucy to perceive this concept differently or even consider the possibility of a wedding with Kate, if guided by the right circumstances. Currently, I’m hoping it will be Kate who is the chosen one.

It appeared in season 3 that the strong bond between Kate and Tara suggested a potential upcoming wedding. As their trust and friendship grew, it’s possible they had already tied the knot. This is hinted at by Whistler’s family being more accepting of the idea, as shown by Al-Bustami’s quote. However, due to the ending of NCIS: Hawai’i, we will never get to witness a Kate Whistler and Tara wedding because it is one of several stories that won’t be shown on screen.

2. Kate Whistler

Whistler Could Have Married The Love Of Her Life

Given Tara’s situation, it seems probable that Whistler chose to remain on the team to maintain proximity to her, considering their strong connection and compatibility. If either of them had to relocate to another city or department, they probably would have done so together. As a tightly-knit duo, they likely made the decision to stay put and continue working as Special Agents because they found no compelling reason to part ways. Moreover, both of them are vital contributors to the team, and their absence would be deeply missed.

It’s highly likely that the couple, having weathered many challenges together, will enjoy a bright future beyond the end of NCIS: Hawai’i. While a wedding was one possibility, their relationship might have naturally evolved without one. Given their current situation, no significant changes seemed necessary. Regardless, it’s almost certain that Whistler would have continued working with the team as long as Tara was around.

1. Ernie Malik

Ernie Stayed With The Team

Apart from Tennant, only Ernie Malik has been confirmed to have an update following the cancellation of NCIS: Hawaii. In NCIS season 22, Ernie was one of the characters who supported McGee’s coffee fundraiser from the satellite offices. Interestingly, he was also the only other character from NCIS: Hawai’i who purchased the coffee during this event. Since the coffee orders were based on the members of the satellite offices rather than the characters from the NCIS spinoff in general, Ernie’s purchase suggested that he was still working alongside Tennant at the NCIS: Hawai’i office.

With Ernie’s exceptional talent as a Cyber Intelligence Expert, coupled with his lively and engaging demeanor, he undeniably brought a unique touch to the NCIS: Hawai’i squad. Frankly, I, along with many others, am delighted that he continues to be part of the team, contributing to their investigations. His generosity in supporting the coffee fundraiser during NCIS season 22, episode 13, and his request for four cases of Fire Brew coffee, showcase not only his benevolent side but also his electrifying character as well.

As a devoted movie critic, I must say that the addition of Ernie to the NCIS: Hawai’i team was nothing short of exceptional. Each team member brought their own distinct flavor, but Ernie truly stood out. Picture another tech genius filling his shoes, and it seems almost unimaginable. His unique abilities have seamlessly integrated him into the squad, and it feels right that he should remain a constant presence, alongside Tennant in the office. Their individual skillsets complement each other perfectly without causing any discord, making Ernie an indispensable part of this dynamic team.
