In the early stages of Naruto’s journey, Neji was one of his initial adversaries who strongly contended that Naruto’s path as a ninja was absurd. This setup an intriguing contrast between Neji and Naruto during the Chunin Exams, with the winner’s convictions ultimately shaping the narrative. For many Naruto fans, this battle served as a significant milestone for our hero, demonstrating his conviction that diligence and determination can alter one’s fate, even one’s own. However, perceptive viewers might have noticed that as the story progressed into Naruto Shippuden, Neji’s arguments seemed increasingly valid. In fact, throughout their entire battle, Neji maintained that people are bound by the destiny they were born into and that it cannot be altered. Despite Naruto’s relentless efforts to prove otherwise, the series’ development might have inadvertently supported the Genin’s viewpoint.

In my perspective, as Naruto Shippuden steadily approached its grand finale, numerous truths emerged during the intense conflicts waged by our central characters. Right from the onset of Shippuden, Naruto tirelessly honed his skills and devised an array of techniques and jutsus to brace himself for the looming conflict. However, the core of Naruto’s concluding storyline revolved around a recurring reincarnation cycle that positioned Naruto and Sasuke as halves of a prophesied savior, implying that every event leading up to that point was instrumental in shaping Naruto’s predestined role.

A Clash of Destiny

The encounter between Neji and Naruto seemed inevitable, given that most one-on-one fights during the Chunin exams featured talented Genin against determined ones. While it was clear at times that our protagonist might falter, these competitions ultimately served to educate fans about the world of Naruto. Naruto battled for those who were considered weak but aspired to rise above their perceived worth, and for Hinata and Rock Lee, who had lost in previous matches. As they squared off, Neji shared his past and the destiny he felt was unavoidable. By the end of the fight, Naruto demonstrated to Neji that, according to the ninja code, individuals have the power to shape their own destinies and break free from their predetermined paths.

In essence, this confrontation seemed predestined because the two Genin were polar opposites, with only one able to claim victory, thereby discrediting the other’s beliefs as inferior. Despite Neji’s superior techniques often controlling the fight, he consistently underestimated those he deemed unworthy of greatness. Blinded by his belief system, Neji failed to see his own limitations. Standing in stark contrast was Naruto, who drew strength from his personal convictions. Driven by determination, Naruto shaped his fate by harnessing Kurama’s chakra to defeat his adversary and prove his potential for transformation.

The Man Destined for Greatness

A significant portion of the early episodes of ‘Naruto’, like the confrontation between Neji and Naruto, emphasized that Naruto was just a determined and resilient ninja. However, as more viewers progressed into ‘Naruto’ and ‘Naruto Shippuden’, it became clear that Naruto might be something more than a diligent shinobi. The series’ narrative starts to lean towards a savior story during the Shippuden war arc, as Naruto starts outperforming characters and is even unveiled as one-half of the reincarnated “God of Shinobi”. If that’s not destiny, it’s hard to say what is. This single truth alone makes Naruto appear somewhat arrogant and satisfies long-time Neji fans, but there are still many earlier instances that distinguish Naruto from a typical, hardworking character.

Examining several triumphs of Naruto, it’s clear that a significant portion of his wins can be attributed to the Tailed Beast within him and the abundant chakra inherited from his lineage. This new perspective shifts Neji vs. Naruto not just as an underdog ninja versus a clan prodigy, but as two genin, each with powers exceeding many in the ninja world, clashing to protect their deeply held values. Although it’s tempting to label Naruto, the savior of the Shinobi world, as a hypocrite, there remains a strong argument for his unwavering determination to fight for those under him and motivate them to strive for self-improvement.
