Despite the uncertainties in Hollywood, Marvel movies released on Disney+ are consistently attracting a massive audience, reminiscent of the Hulk’s strength. Only a few months after debuting the first MCU movie since Deadpool and Wolverine, which received mixed reviews and moderate box office returns, Anthony Mackie’s full Captain America premiere has now outperformed Lilo & Stitch on Disney+’s streaming platform.
Ever since Disney’s live-action take on the beloved classic, “Lilo & Stitch,” graced our screens, this little extraterrestrial has been holding his own against some tough competition on Disney+, with his original animated series and subsequent sequels/spinoffs. However, in a bizarre twist that could rival any sci-fi plot, it appears Red Hulk has outmaneuvered Blue Alien in an odd game of rock, paper, scissors. Meanwhile, “Brave New World” made a splashy debut at the top spot on the platform after its release on Wednesday, May 28. As a movie critic, I can’t help but marvel at the ever-changing landscape of streaming entertainment!
In the TV series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie’s character, who had previously declined the title of Captain America from Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame, was eventually promoted to the role. His debut film saw him facing off against The Leader, portrayed by Tim Blake Nelson, and Red Hulk, played by Harrison Ford, who received significant promotion in the movie marketing. Now, viewers can stream this movie through their Disney+ subscription, ensuring a successful box office opening.
Was ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ a Misfire for the MCU?
Contrary to how some viewed it, Brave New World didn’t suffer the same financial fate as The Marvels in 2023. Instead, it outperformed Chris Evans’ initial Captain America film at the box office in terms of earnings, amassing $415 million. Although the movie required $425 million to reach a break-even point, considering additional income from merchandise and digital/physical media sales, this year’s Marvel Cinematic Universe release wasn’t considered a financial failure.
Regarding the movie’s reviews, the story seems to have divided opinions. The Tomatometer score for Brave New World, which is relatively low compared to other movies in its series, stands at just 47%. However, it has garnered a positive response from audiences, rating it similarly to The Marvels. While the Brie Larson-led Captain Marvel sequel scored 62% and 79% from critics and audiences respectively, Brave New World has managed to secure an audience approval rating of 78%.
It appears that the main problems with “Brave New World” arose from people expecting it to be something other than a typical Marvel film. Those who went to watch the usual Saturday morning cartoon-style action provided by the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) generally found it satisfying. However, those searching for more depth in their entertainment were left feeling unsatisfied. Despite some less-than-stellar performances and minor setbacks like “Brave New World,” the momentum of the Marvel Studios phenomenon is too strong to collapse. Minor issues such as these will likely be overshadowed by upcoming blockbusters like “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars,” which are expected to compete with “Endgame” for a spot among the highest-grossing movies ever made.
