Warning: SPOILERS for Suits LA episode 13, “Freedom.”
In a different phrasing: Stephen Amell’s character was undoubtedly the main star in the show Suits LA, yet one significant secondary character could have gained more depth if given similar focus on their backstory, as seen with Ted Black throughout the series. The final moments of the Suits LA finale suggest that the possibility of its cancellation was not fully considered when filming the first season. Many plot points that seemed to be set up for further exploration later on were left unresolved by the time it ended, as the show’s low ratings prevented a second season from being produced.
As a devoted fan of Suits LA, it’s understandable that some supporting characters like Rosalyn didn’t get extensive backstories in the first season. Characters such as Leah and Samantha also take a backseat compared to the main cast members Stuart and Rick. However, even major characters like Erica Rollins and Amanda Stevens were not given much background information about their pasts on Suits LA. While Amanda’s history with her father and Elizabeth Smith provides some depth to her trials in the show, it also highlights the lack of depth in Erica’s character.
Suits LA Never Explores The Backstory Between Amanda And Erica
There’s Definitely A Story Behind Those Chinese Dinners
In a sense, Erica Rollins’ promotion to partner seems like compensation for the missing details about Jessica Pearson in Suits. However, while Suits LA hints at Erica’s past, it doesn’t fully elucidate its significance. For example, Erica often talks about working harder than anyone else at the firm, but she heavily relies on Leah’s expertise in the initial part of the season because she’s not very knowledgeable about the department she aspires to head. Yet, that’s far from the most intriguing aspect of her history that remains shrouded in mystery.
In the fourth episode of Suits LA, we learn midway through that Erica has been occasionally treating Amanda to Chinese food, a total of ten times over the past year. She explains this gesture is her way of expressing gratitude for Amanda’s help last year, but the show doesn’t delve into the specific details of that situation. By the end of Suits LA, it’s evident that whatever happened appears to be a crucial aspect of Erica’s past, leaving one of the most intriguing mysteries in Suits LA.
What Could Amanda Have Done For Erica Before Suits LA’s Beginning?
It Seems To Have Been A Touch More Personal Than Professional
Regrettably, the cancellation of Suits LA implies that we’ll never see how Erica’s past with Amanda unfolds. Although the specifics of Amanda’s favor for Erica remain unclear, there are a few clues that might offer some insights into the predicament Amanda assisted with. For instance, Amanda’s expertise as a criminal defense attorney hints that Erica’s issue was likely a legal matter. This could mean that one of Erica’s entertainment clients required assistance from the firm’s criminal division, a situation that has occurred frequently in Suits LA.
In episode 11 of Suits, instead of professional favors being tied to long-term obligations, they are usually more straightforwardly reciprocal. Here, Erica requested a substantial favor from Amanda that put pressure on her to accept a difficult client. This implies a significant favor, possibly one that could have compromised professional integrity, as Erica hadn’t yet adequately repaid Amanda for her help. If the legal assistance wasn’t for Erica herself or her client, it might have been extended to one of her close associates, perhaps a parent.
How Suits LA Season 2 Could Have Explored Amanda And Erica’s Backstory
The Merger Might Have Created New Tensions Between Them
Ted appears not fully informed about Erica’s background. Although he finds out in the series finale that Amanda can be swayed with egg rolls, this information seems to be something new to Ted, rather than a hint suggesting why Amanda and Erica frequently dine together in earlier episodes. It remains unclear if this intriguing aspect of Erica’s past will ever be disclosed to other colleagues beyond Amanda. However, it’s easy to envision ways in which Erica’s backstory might be gradually revealed to the viewers over time.
In most episodes, the flashbacks relate to the main storyline somehow. So, it’s plausible that during their conflict due to the merger in the Suits LA final episode, Erica and Amanda could have been discussing their past secrets. Although Amanda continues to bring a distinctive touch since Stuart seems to lack pro bono clients, the merged firm wouldn’t necessarily require Erica as a partner given Samantha, Rick, and Ted are already on board. If Erica felt overlooked again by her superiors, this could have been the emotional catalyst the series needed to explore Erica’s history more deeply.
