From the very beginning, Gohan has stood out as one of the most powerful characters in the Dragon Ball series. Given his lineage as Goku’s son, it’s no wonder he’s headed for big things. The storyline suggests that Gohan’s extraordinary and groundbreaking abilities are due to his exceptional Saiyan-Human hybrid physiology. Throughout his life, several factors have propelled him towards greatness, enabling him to achieve the seemingly unachievable.
Gohan’s Super Saiyan 2, Ultimate, and Beast transformations are some of the most powerful transformations seen in the “Dragon Ball” series. Yet, just because Gohan possesses these transformations doesn’t guarantee he effortlessly dominates his opponents in combat. Intriguingly, there have been numerous battles that heighten the tension because Gohan often finds himself roughly equal to his adversaries.
Dragon Ball Z, Episodes 226 & 227, “Pay To Win” & “Heart Of A Villain”
Over the course of the Buu Saga, Majin Buu transforms into the main antagonist, with Babidi manipulating events and gaining power through his wicked Majin minions. In this period, Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan face off against some of Babidi’s strongest soldiers. Goku and Vegeta find their battles relatively easy to handle, but Gohan encounters significant difficulties against Dabura. Despite being one of Babidi’s top soldiers, Dabura boasts powerful abilities such as Stone Spit, which turns targets into stone. Gohan recognizes this confrontation as a significant test for him, as Dabura’s strength is on par with Perfect Cell, making it a formidable challenge that he takes seriously.
Over the last seven years, Gohan barely trained, leading to a decline in his powers. This leaves Vegeta dismayed, as he wishes to face Dabura personally. In their skirmish, Gohan manages to strike Dabura and shatter his Darkness Sword, but remains on the defensive throughout. As Gohan grows anxious, Dabura gains confidence. Had Dabura not abruptly ended the battle, it could have very well resulted in his victory over Gohan.
Dragon Ball Super, Episode 90, “Staring Down The Wall To Be Overcome Goku Vs. Gohan”
The Tournament of Power in Dragon Ball Super serves as an excellent opportunity for numerous Dragon Ball heroes to rekindle their martial arts prowess. In the process of gearing up for this tournament, Gohan demonstrates remarkable improvement which leaves Goku awestruck, leading him to choose Gohan as the captain of Team Universe 7. Just prior to the tournament, Gohan and Piccolo test the extent of their training by challenging Goku and Tien to a two-on-two sparring match.
In this brief skirmish, Universe 7’s fighters showcase their remarkable foundation, as they alternate between launching assaults and approaching the opposition. They successfully thwart Tien from firing his Tri-Beam, giving Piccolo a chance to counter with a powerful blast. Although Goku doesn’t reach his full power level in this encounter, “Dragon Ball Super” hints that it’s an evenly matched battle. The subsequent fight between Ultimate Gohan and Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-Ken Goku shares some of the same qualities, but it’s evident that Goku maintains the advantage.
Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 103, “A Legacy Toward The Future”
In the final chapters of Dragon Ball Super’s Super Hero Saga, the manga offers a delightful wrap-up that teasingly explores how powerful Gohan has become with his new Bestial form. The confrontation between True Ultra Instinct Goku and Gohan Beast serves as an engaging start, with Goku conceding defeat to his son early on. This battle between father and offspring is incredibly satisfying, but the story doesn’t stop there—Dragon Ball Super decides to push it further by pitting Gohan Beast against Broly, Vegeta, Goten, and Trunks!
The current attack from Gohan surpasses significantly his previous assault against Goku. Intriguingly, Goku notices striking similarities between Gohan’s combat style and Broly’s, leading him to ponder whether Broly too might unleash a Beast mode. Gradually, Gohan manages to build an advantage, yet neither Saiyan is giving their all in this battle. It’s worth noting that Broly has only recently mastered the Legendary Super Saiyan state, making it a relatively new aspect of his character.
Dragon Ball Super, Episode 103, “Gohan, Get Ruthless! Showdown With The 10th Universe!”
In “Dragon Ball Super” Episode 103, titled “Gohan, Unleash Your Fury! Showdown with the 10th Universe”, we see Gohan training intensely for the Tournament of Power, harboring doubts about his strength and whether he can match up to his contemporaries. The episode opens with a heated argument between Gohan and Universe 6’s Botamo. Interestingly, Gohan’s encounter with Botamo mirrors Goku’s battle against him during the Tournament of Destroyers.
In simpler terms, Botamo’s strongest tactic is his tough hide, which effectively absorbs all attacks and prevents any damage. For Goku and Gohan to win, they had to physically lift Botamo out of the arena’s boundaries. Although Gohan emerged as the winner, a more proactive Botamo who didn’t wait to be cornered would have likely been able to hold his own against Gohan.
Dragon Ball Z, Episodes 265, 266 & 267, “Majin Buu Transforms,” “The Old Kai’s Weapon” & “Ready To Fuse”
In the anime series Dragon Ball Z, Gohan’s success is certainly set up after undergoing rigorous training on the Sacred World of the Kai and achieving his powerful Ultimate form. However, despite this advantage, Ultimate Gohan faces a significant challenge when Super Buu cunningly absorbs both Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks and Piccolo, leaving Super Buu (Gotenks Absorbed) as an entirely new adversary. Not only does Ultimate Gohan lose his initial advantage, but there are instances where he becomes frightened and retreats from Buu due to a lack of effective countermeasures.
In simpler terms, Gotenks merges with Buu, weakening himself significantly compared to Gohan. This boosts Gohan’s belief that he can triumph without fusing with Goku. However, when Buu absorbs Gohan, it ultimately leads to the memorable fusion of Goku and Vegeta into Vegito.
Dragon Ball Super, Episode 80, “Awaken Your Dormant Fighting Spirit! Gohan’s Fight!”
Many Dragon Ball fights appear balanced, though they may not result in a tie. However, exceptionally, Gohan’s duel with Universe 9’s Lavender in the Zeno Expo ended inconclusively. The Zeno Expo is often overlooked as it serves more like an amusing prelude to the actual Tournament of Power. Despite this, all fights within the Zeno Expo are engaging, and Gohan’s battle with Lavender pushes the Saiyan to innovate his strategies. It should be noted that in this particular encounter, Lavender has the upper hand against Gohan.
In a turn of events, Lavender releases a harmful fog into Gohan’s vicinity, temporarily blinding him and gradually draining his strength as the toxicity increases. With Lavender now invisible due to the smog and undetectable through ki sensing, Gohan depends on his other senses, primarily hearing, to track Lavender’s whereabouts. However, Lavender evades this tactic by flying upwards. The contest between Gohan and Lavender becomes a back-and-forth battle. While Gohan’s Super Saiyan form assists him in locating Lavender precisely, it also amplifies the toxin’s impact, making it increasingly difficult for Gohan to overpower Lavender in a beam clash. In a desperate attempt to win, Gohan resorts to a Full-Nelson strike, resulting in an inconclusive outcome as both combatants are knocked out together.
Dragon Ball Super, Episode 22, “Change! An Unexpected Return! His Name Is Ginyu!!”
In Dragon Ball Super, the initial two storylines are expansions of the last two Dragon Ball Z movies, Battle of Gods and Resurrection F. Gohan, one of Dragon Ball Z’s strongest characters, lets his training slide in Dragon Ball Super as he focuses on other aspects of life instead. Gohan reaches a point of significant regression during Frieza’s revival and the assault by the reconstituted Frieza Force. Despite not appearing particularly menacing, Tagoma is actually Frieza’s personal trainer for four months. This training enabled Frieza’s Golden transformation, but it also granted Tagoma a Body of Steel ability, making him extraordinarily tough.
Furthermore, it’s clear that Tagoma’s strength reaches impressive peaks. It’s noted that when Gohan is well-rested, his power matches the base level of Gohan, but in his Ultimate and Super Saiyan forms, Tagoma excels. Eventually, Gohan manages to defeat Tagoma using only a few attacks after transforming into a Super Saiyan. Interestingly, the battle between Gohan (in his regular form) and Tagoma, who is out of practice, is incredibly balanced. Neither Gohan nor Piccolo’s attacks seem to have any effect on Tagoma’s Iron Body.
Dragon Ball Super, Episode 124, “A Storm-And-Stress Assault! Gohan’s Last Stand!”
In many people’s eyes, teaming up with Frieza from Universe 7 is difficult to accept, but Gohan harbors strong doubts about trusting him. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Gohan finds himself partnered with Frieza as they confront Dyspo, a Pride Trooper and one of the fastest beings in the universe, from Universe 11.
In the battle, Gohan and Frieza restrict Dyspo’s primary strength by confining him within a cage made of energy beams (ki beams). With no chance to flee, Dyspo is compelled to fight Gohan in hand-to-hand combat. In this close quarters, they both showcase their equally formidable skills. Although Gohan doesn’t manage to defeat Dyspo before the ki cage separates, he effectively achieves a stalemate by holding onto Dyspo tightly and allowing a joint blast from Frieza to eliminate them both.
Dragon Ball Super, Movie 2, “Super Hero”
In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, the story reaches its peak with a grand confrontation against Cell Max, Dr. Hedo’s supreme creation and a highly volatile biological weapon. Gohan’s recent Beast transformation, along with Piccolo’s Orange upgrade, play crucial roles in defeating Cell Max. Prior to Cell Max’s activation, it was Dr. Hedo’s Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 who caused havoc for Piccolo and Gohan. These advanced Androids surpassed anything previously created by Dr. Gero.
In the heat of battle, I can confidently say that Gamma 1 and 2 outmatch both Gohan and Piccolo from the get-go. In fact, Piccolo himself acknowledges that the Android duo possess power akin to Goku and Vegeta!
Now, here’s where things get interesting. Despite their initial advantage, Gohan manages to find his footing against Gamma 1 when he triggers his Ultimate upgrade. The battle then becomes a dance of equals – but just for a moment.
However, let’s not forget the elephant in the room: Gamma 1’s boundless energy and stamina could have tipped the scales back in their favor had their duel stretched on for an eternity. It serves as a stark reminder that even when we seem to be holding our own against formidable opponents, there’s always more to consider.
Dragon Ball Z, Episodes 189, 190 & 191, “Cell Returns!,” “The Horror Won’t End” & “Save The World”
In the anime series Dragon Ball Z, the villain Cell presents an exceptionally tough adversary that’s hard to completely defeat. Despite Cell’s self-destruct move killing Goku, his exceptional regenerative powers enable him to fully recover. Moreover, Cell’s Saiyan DNA enables him to become stronger via zenkai boosts and also assimilates some of Goku’s DNA. Consequently, this transformation leads to Super Perfect Cell, who claims to be as powerful as a Super Saiyan 2.
Gohan’s transformation into Super Saiyan 2 left Perfect Cell utterly defeated, but he now faces a formidable challenge due to this new complication. The climactic battle between them is one of the most thrilling energy clashes in “Dragon Ball Z”. Gohan’s Father-Son Kamehameha ultimately proves stronger than Cell’s Solar Kamehameha, but this victory was possible because his friends stepped in to help, trying to distract and weaken Cell. This iconic moment highlights Gohan’s incredible power, as well as the significance of friendship.
