Tatsuki Fujimoto’s comic “Chainsaw Man” stands out in the shonen genre due to its ominous and uncommon atmosphere. Although the gloominess has been present throughout the storyline, it wasn’t until Part 1 concluded that the plot took a significantly somber turn. The main character, Denji, serves as the focus for this downward spiral, with his turbulent childhood making it evident that he may never experience tranquility, either inside or out. Makima is the one who drives Denji deeper into darkness by slaying his dearest friends, causing him emotional distress, and leading him on a path that even a typical human wouldn’t be able to withstand.

In the sequel of “Chainsaw Man,” Denji’s hardships intensify as he experiences more heart-wrenching losses, notably with Nayuta, who holds a special place as his closest family-like figure. Yet, astonishingly resilient, Denji repeatedly bounces back from the extreme trauma he encounters. Notably, although he has been influenced in a manner similar to Makima’s control by the War Devil, he still maintains a strong sense of heroism, continually focusing on safeguarding humans and eradicating devils. However, Chapter 204 of “Chainsaw Man” signifies a crucial shift as Denji kills a human in his battle against the False Chainsaw Man. This event shatters his former aspirations towards heroism or morality, leaving him in a questionable moral position.

Denji Loses His Heroic Spirit in His Latest Clash With an Enemy

Though I’ve faced countless harrowing experiences, a heroic spirit within me persists, perhaps fueled by my craving for recognition. I’ve never claimed another human life, save for my father – a man who was more abuser than parent. The details of his demise are cloudy, but it seems I defended myself against his alcohol-fueled abuse. Fans may question my actions due to my anti-hero persona, yet the truth is, I’ve never been portrayed as a cold-blooded killer in human terms. In fact, even during my recent battle with the False Chainsaw Man, you’ll see me consistently attempting to shield the innocent humans he was using as weapons.

In a manner reminiscent of video game strategy, Denji tries to eliminate the false Chainsaw Man by plunging a knife into his heart, a move that proves successful. However, one hostage tragically loses their life during this encounter. The lack of regret or empathy Denji displays in this instance adds an ominous tone. Although this behavior may align with his anti-villain characteristics, it starkly contrasts with his previous focus on safeguarding humans. This change hints at Denji’s growing moral ambiguity and willingness to venture into darker territories. The weight of his past traumas and current events seems to have taken a heavy toll on him, leading many to expect that he will continue to walk a sinister path as Chainsaw Man Part 2 approaches its dramatic conclusion.
