In The Last of Us series, characters tend to be secretive. Given how harsh and uncertain the world has become, it’s smart not to put too much faith in others since it can be challenging to distinguish friend from foe. Throughout Season 1, Joel works on getting Ellie to adopt this mindset as she is quick to trust those she perceives as needing help. However, Joel knows the consequences of lowering one’s guard firsthand and will do whatever it takes to protect Ellie, who still retains some of her human qualities. Similarly, Abby in Season 2 only trusts her old Firefly friends, embodying a similar level of caution due to the unpredictable nature of their surroundings.
It’s tough to hold Abby responsible for her actions because she suffered the loss of her father, following the Fireflies placing their trust in a practically stranger to transport the most valuable person in their world across the country, only for him to deceive them. Grieving, Abby channels her sorrow into a quest to locate and punish Joel. However, unbeknownst to her, this pursuit sets in motion a chain of events that eventually leads her to form an unlikely alliance.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Last of Us Part II game!
Ellie Force Abby’s Hand in The Last of Us Season 2
After Abby slays Joel, she and their companions think their task is completed. To prevent further harm, they spare Dina and Ellie and depart. However, Ellie won’t back down without a struggle, causing her and Dina to hatch a plan and journey to Seattle, where Abby’s organization, the Washington Liberation Front (WLF), resides. The pair gradually uncover information about the WLF’s war against the Seraphites, a ruthless religious sect known for their brutal methods like tearing people apart. Despite their efforts to stay focused, they are engulfed by the conflict, which leaves Dina injured and Ellie in grave danger.
In a turning point during her search for Abby, Ellie encounters Owen and Mel and ends up killing them both in self-defense when Owen attempts to grab his gun. This act causes Ellie to despise herself even more, especially upon discovering Mel’s pregnancy. However, she feels prepared to return home until Tommy and Jesse arrive. As they organize the theater, a sound from another room catches their attention. Upon investigating, Jesse gets shot in the head, and Ellie finds Abby standing over Tommy. Instead of shooting right away, Abby seems angry about Ellie not letting go of Joel’s death, but she has changed since the start of the season, thanks to the intervention of a character who remains unseen.
The Last of Us Season 3’s Biggest Addition Should Be Present in Season 2’s Finale
In the game ‘The Last of Us Part II’, Abby isn’t in a good shape upon arrival at the theater; she’s unkempt and has an injury on her neck that suggests it was caused by a noose. However, it appears unlikely that she managed to trail Ellie and her companions back to the theater given her state of health. Instead, Abby has been independently navigating Seattle while Ellie is on the hunt for her. During her journey, Abby encounters a pair of outcast Seraphites who require assistance. One of them, Lev, develops feelings for Abby and assists her whenever he can. They face numerous battles together, and Lev is there when Abby confronts Ellie at the theater.
Lev may not be well-versed in the circumstances, but he stands by Abby’s side and inflicts significant harm on Ellie’s group. Although The Last of Us Season 2 reserves such events for Season 3, Lev’s influence is palpable throughout the finale, even though he’s not visibly present. With most of Abby’s comrades deceased, he’s her last remaining ally to battle for, and as her behavior in the theater demonstrates, she will stop at nothing to prevent Ellie or anyone else from taking anything else away from her.
The Last of Us Season 2 is streaming on HBO Max.
