The franchise primarily revolves around the concept that death is an unavoidable aspect for all living beings. Death follows a specific pattern, complete with regulations and procedures to maintain the natural order of life. However, it subtly suggests that evading death might be feasible, but only temporarily. The initial five movies in the Final Destination series, along with numerous books carrying the same title, follow a character who experiences an unexpected preview of their own violent demise and the fate of those around them.

Initially, I witnessed the catastrophic explosion aboard Flight 180, followed by a multi-car pileup on Route 23, an unimaginable derailment on the Devil’s Flight rollercoaster, chaotic crashes at McKinley Speedway, and the heart-wrenching collapse of the North Bay Bridge. Miraculously, a handful of people were rescued from these disasters, but Death didn’t hesitate to reclaim them in gruesome and peculiar ways.

As the story unfolded, certain principles were established: those who manipulated the system would meet their end according to their original fate from the catastrophe, but meddling with another’s demise would shuffle the sequence. Moreover, if one individual took another’s life, they would exchange positions on Death’s list. The rules varied with each set of survivors, yet every film adhered to a similar structure.

Final Destination: Bloodlines Changed the Game

In 2025, the latest installment of “Final Destination,” titled “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” significantly altered the course of horror movies. The story revolves around Stefani Lewis, whose academic journey is threatened by frequent, terrifying nightmares that cause her to awaken in a state of panic whenever she manages to sleep. In these dreams, she encounters a woman named Iris, who attends the grand opening of the Sky View Tower in 1968 with her boyfriend Paul. Due to her fear of heights, Iris is immediately uneasy, but she begins noticing ominous signs throughout the restaurant that hint at impending danger. Not long after Paul proposes, these warnings come true, triggered by a mischievous child throwing pennies, a falling chandelier, and hasty construction work.

From my perspective, it all began with a seemingly harmless act: a boy casually tossing a coin from the tower above. Little did we know that this innocent action would set off a chain reaction. The penny, in its trajectory, dislodged a piece of the chandelier hanging high above us. This fragile ornament tumbled down, striking the dancefloor with a resounding thud and creating a minuscule crack.

As the rhythmic beats of “Shout” by the Isley Brothers filled the air and the partygoers grew more exuberant, the small crack in the dancefloor started to widen. The cheering and dancing intensified, and before we knew it, the once tiny crack had transformed into a massive fissure. With a deafening groan, the dancefloor collapsed under our feet, sending countless partygoers plummeting almost 500 feet towards the ground below.

The chaos that ensued was indescribable. The commotion from the collapsing dancefloor triggered an explosion and more of the building crumbled, trapping and ultimately claiming the lives of nearly everyone present.

In Stefani’s dreams, she finds herself waking up just as Iris, her maternal grandmother, seems to be dying. It is later discovered that this tragic event never occurred in reality because Iris, who was on the dancefloor, caused a commotion and alerted everyone to leave. The terrifying nightmares that haunted Stefani were actually a repetition of the premonition Iris experienced that fateful evening. This leads Stefani on a quest to reconnect with her estranged grandmother, who shares with her insights about death and the peril associated with such psychic abilities before she unexpectedly and violently passes away.

As a cinephile diving into the world of “Final Destination”, I must admit that I was initially taken aback when “Bloodlines” opened with a catastrophe reminiscent of the series’ signature start. However, instead of our usual protagonist waking up from a premonition, it was a fresh character named Stefani who found herself in the midst of a terrifying nightmare. The familiar trope of strangers bonding after escaping Death’s grasp was present, but this time, it was an entire family hanging by a thread.

For many fans, the repetitive nature of five films following the same formula had become somewhat monotonous and stale. Yet, “Bloodlines” managed to breathe new life into the franchise by introducing innovative twists while remaining faithful to its roots and underlying themes.

A Theory Suggests Bloodlines Adds to the Lore

Beyond its initial concept, “Bloodlines” doesn’t closely tie into the rest of the series, offering a refreshing twist. Unlike “Final Destination 2”, it lacks a legacy character like Clear Rivers who steps in to save the day, and it doesn’t end with the surprising plot twists seen in the original “Final Destination”, such as Sam and Molly boarding Flight 180 and experiencing the catastrophic event. While other “Final Destination” sequels don’t share these direct connections, they generally adhered to a similar formula. However, the 14-year gap between the release of previous installments and “Bloodlines” certainly contributed to shaking things up.

It’s true that most of the Final Destination movies, excluding The Final Destination and Final Destination 3, include Tony Todd as William Bludworth. However, in FD3, he only provided the voice for the Devil on the Devil’s Flight coaster. Notably, each film in this series maintains a certain level of mystery, with details being deliberately kept hidden. This is a characteristic that continues in Final Destination: Bloodlines as well, leaving room for fans to speculate and form their own theories about the connections between the films.

A significant aspect of the plot in the ‘Final Destination’ series revolves around the fact that those who survived the disaster at Sky View are marked for death first, and once they die, Death targets their kin, as if their existence was an anomaly in the grand scheme of things. Some fans have speculated that characters from each film share a common ancestry with the survivors of Sky View, but this has been debunked by the creators of ‘Bloodlines’. An alternate theory proposes that instead of being descendants, there’s one common link among all those involved in each disaster – they are all related to someone who was at Sky View. For example, the pilot of Flight 180, a friend of Kimberly on Route 23, a resident of McKinley High on Devil’s Flight, a driver at the McKinley Speedway, or the bus driver on the North Bay Bridge could all be part of the Sky View family line.

William Bludworth portrays Death as an exacting, relentless entity, and some speculate that Death itself sends premonitions, either to enjoy causing distress or to systematically eliminate those marked for elimination in the proper sequence. For example, if someone aboard Flight 180 was a descendant of a Sky View survivor, they had been on Death’s list their entire lives. Death warned Alex to keep him safe because it wasn’t his time yet, but he too was on the list. Death grew frustrated when Alex and other main characters used their gift to save others, disrupting the list even further, which is why their fates might have been worse than they otherwise would have been. This theory could apply to any of the movies, but there’s one character in particular who could potentially be a descendant of a Sky View survivor.

A Potential Sequel Could Lean Into it Further

In the movie “Final Destination 2,” it’s shown that Death has a habit of wrapping up unfinished business. This is evident as all the survivors from Route 23 had earlier brush-with-death encounters, each one somehow linked to the crash of Flight 180. The film also introduces Kimberly Corman to the series, who was later confirmed in “Bloodlines” to be an exceptionally unique case. She drowned, flatlined, and was revived in a hospital, which is rare compared to the initial theory’s parameters.

In simpler terms, Alex Browning can’t be related to the original Sky View survivors because both his parents were alive in the first film. However, Kimberly Corman might be a descendant through her mother’s lineage, considering she was on Death’s list due to her mother’s death. It’s unclear if Kimberly’s premonitions are from Death or just a reflection of his malicious nature, as it’s possible she has psychic abilities or Death is using her to cause distress. Essentially, after Flight 180 eliminated the person before Kimberly on Death’s list, he targeted the Corman women.

Final Destination: Bloodlines was a follow-up film that successfully blended respect for its predecessor with a forward-moving narrative. In the case of Bloodlines, this was achieved through numerous callbacks, but the legacy element was significantly shaped by the late and highly esteemed Tony Todd. Unfortunately, Bloodlines marked Todd’s final performance as he passed away before its premiere. Replicating the unique essence of Todd or his character William Bludworth would be futile. However, there’s still anticipation for Kimberly Corman to reprise her role as a legacy character, potentially paving the way for a future sequel.

In a twist of events, Kimberly, despite being a Sky View descendant, is immune to Death’s touch due to her death in Final Destination 2. However, if she has had children in the last two decades, they might not share this immunity, much like Stefani Reyes or the other Campbell children, as their birth was not foreseen. Reintroducing Kimberly would be a delight for fans and could help clarify the woodchipper incident, which is often considered part of the Final Destination series’ canon, especially in the DVD’s Choose Their Fate feature. Alternatively, bringing her back might establish it as canonical and potentially tarnish the image of woodchippers for everyone else.
