There’s a new detective comedy-drama in town, and it’s giving Ludwig a run for its money.

Indeed, it’s true that Death Valley’s initial episode surpassed David Mitchell’s cherished series in terms of ratings, as confirmed by the BBC.

Commencing on BBC One this past Sunday, 25th May, the fresh series managed to gather an audience of approximately 2.9 million viewers, marking the biggest overnight viewership for a brand-new BBC scripted comedy in the last five years.

In contrast, Ludwig’s premiere, which landed back in September 2024, secured 2.8 million.

The two shows share many common elements, such as having outstanding ensembles and central plots revolving around an unconventional detective duo.

For the setting of Death Valley, we find two characters: John Chapel, a former actor portrayed by Timothy Spall, and Detective Janie Mallowan, an emerging officer played by Gwyneth Keyworth, who also happens to be Chapel’s significant other.

As a movie buff, I’m eagerly anticipating “Ludwig,” where Mitchell steps into the shoes of a riddle-decipherer disguised as a detective, on a quest to locate his long-lost twin brother. Meanwhile, Anna Maxwell Martin brings the role of the twin’s devoted wife to life.

Fortunately, you can also stream both shows right now on iPlayer, allowing enthusiasts to decide which one excels the most.
