Warning: Live-action Lilo & Stitch plot points are coming up! Catch the new version in cinemas currently, or revisit the original animation via Disney+ streaming service.
There’s been much discussion about the alterations made to the classic movie “Lilo & Stitch” since its rescheduling for release in 2025. Among these changes are Gantu’s absence, Jumba and Pleakley transforming into humans instead of wearing disguises (with Pleakley now donning dresses), and Nani attending school in the ending – changes that have sparked controversy. Nevertheless, one scene from the original movie has been moved from its middle position to the end of this 2025 film, a change I found quite enjoyable.
It’s clear that a lot of people are growing tired of modern adaptations, as the changes can sometimes be disappointing. However, there’s an alteration in the new Lilo & Stitch film that hasn’t received much attention – it’s about the scene where Stitch sinks into the ocean and how Nani manages to save him. Let me share my thoughts on this particular modification in the live-action version of Lilo & Stitch that I found particularly enjoyable.
In The Animated Lilo & Stitch, David Saves Stitch After He Sinks In The Middle Of The Film
In the animated movie I’m referring to, there’s a scene near the heart of it where Stitch musters up the guts to give surfing a try. Out in the water, Jumba manages to grab Stitch off his surfboard. Later, when Stitch resurfaces, he grabs Lilo, but then Jumba yanks them both underwater instead.
Eventually, Nani and Lilo get back to shore. However, Stitch sinks.
Luckily, David saved him and pulled him out of the water.
Towards the film’s conclusion, Nani and Lilo find themselves aboard a spacecraft, with Stitch lending a hand in their rescue. Luckily, the ship doesn’t crash into the water; instead, it gently lands there, ensuring no one near drowning. In the end, they all safely disembark on dry land.

I Love That Nani Was The One To Save Stitch From The Water At The End Of The Live-Action Film
During the course of this live-action movie, Jumba and Pleakley make an attack on Lilo, Nani, and Stitch as they are surfing. Notably, when they fall off their boards, it’s not crucial to the story that Stitch submerges; instead, the focus is on Lilo being rescued.
Later on, it’s Jumba who escorts Stitch, while Lilo secretly boards the vessel. Eventually, this ship plunges into the water, trapping Lilo under some debris. Stitch dives in to rescue her, but he’s unable to reach the surface again, and Lilo is too weak to lift him because of his weight.

Review of Lilo & Stitch: It’s Delightful to Share That Stitch Retains His Adorable and Furry Appeal in the Live-Action Version, Yet What Truly Shines in This Redesign is Its Deep Human Narrative.
Indeed, Nani ventures back into the sea to rescue Stitch, holding him close beneath the waves. This act served not only to demonstrate Nani’s might but also her profound affection towards Lilo and Stitch. Moreover, it provided a powerful conclusion to this dramatic scene.
In the live-action adaptation, I found myself deeply touched by the choice made, as it presented Nani with a moment to shine as a hero, but more importantly, a chance to demonstrate her profound affection for Stitch. Previously, in the animated film, I had some doubts about whether she truly cared for this alien. Yet, this scene in the live-action movie effectively conveyed that her feelings run deep and she’d even risk her life to protect him like family.

This adjustment made it easier for me to embrace the thought that Stitch truly belonged to this family, and not only as Lilo perceived. Additionally, it was heartwarming to witness how Nani accepted him as their ‘Ohana in such an explicit manner.
Let’s pause for a moment to truly savor this transformation we’ve witnessed. It was touching to see Stitch willing to give up his own life to protect Lilo, and in return, we got an emotional scene where Nani managed to save the small creature, demonstrating her deep affection towards him. In essence, it provided a heartwarming conclusion to this intense conflict that underscored the powerful message: “No one is ever left behind.
