*Warning: This article contains full spoilers for the final episode of The Better Sister.*

The chilling murder of accomplished lawyer and seemingly ideal spouse, Adam (played by Corey Stoll), set the stage for “The Better Sister” with an appropriate dose of suspense, leaving us wondering who cold-bloodedly took his life.

In the final episode of the show, the enigma surrounding Adam’s demise persists, as his wife Chloe (portrayed by Jessica Biel) uncovers more about it amidst her own ordeal of cyber harassment.

Despite some uncertainties about his location at the time, was it him who committed the crime? (In reference to Maxwell Acee Donovan, Ethan’s son being the main suspect)

As Chloe’s aunt and sister Nicky reappear, long-standing familial friction resurfaces, intensifying significantly when they are labeled in the press as “sister wives”.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but wonder: Who was ultimately responsible for Adam’s demise, and what happened in the last episode of “The Better Sister”? Let me walk you through the gripping conclusion of this captivating series.

Ever since I started watching “The Better Sister,” I couldn’t help but ponder: Who ended up taking Adam’s life, and what transpired in the final episode? Let me share with you an analysis of the series’ exhilarating finale.

The Better Sister ending explained: Who killed Adam?

In the final episode, we learn quite soon that the one who murdered Adam was none other than his former wife and Chloe’s sibling, Nicky.

Over the course of many years, Nicky had struggled with a tense bond with her son Ethan. However, behind the scenes, she had been reaching out to Ethan in an attempt to help him connect with his real mother, who was biologically related to him.

One evening, as we were talking, Ethan confided in me about something truly shocking he had seen: his father brutally attacking Chloe. The very thought of what his father was capable of sent a chill down my spine, especially since I too have endured years of abuse at the hands of Adam.

Eager to talk to Chloe and save her, Nicky journeys to meet her, only to encounter Adam instead. Confronting him about his mistreatment and intending to free Chloe, Adam reacts negatively to Nicky’s arrival. The situation quickly escalates, with the two men getting into a violent scuffle as they clash.

In this scenario, Adam presses Nicky firmly against a wall, leaving her immobilized under his grip. Unable to escape, she reaches into her pocket and pulls out a knife, using it to fatally wound him.

Though Ethan’s DNA implicated him (in a crime he wasn’t guilty of), he still played a minor role in the subsequent events.

Discovering Adam’s body lifeless, Ethan grew concerned for Chloe, suspecting her of the murder. In an attempt to fabricate evidence suggesting a burglary, he scattered assorted items to give that impression.

Currently speaking with Chloe, Nicky admitted that she feigned ignorance about Adam’s murder when the police first contacted her regarding it. Additionally, Chloe learned that Adam had been deceiving her about Nicky’s alcoholism all those years, a revelation that ultimately led to Ethan being taken away from Nicky.

Actually, Adam was secretly giving Nicky drugs, and with a heavy heart, knowing he had effectively destroyed Nicky’s life, Chloe is now resolved to protect her sister’s confidentiality and prevent her from being punished for Adam’s homicide.

Chloe knows Adam was hurting Nicky with drugs, and since she feels responsible because it led to his death, she wants to keep quiet about this and shield her sister from getting in trouble for it.

What happens to Chloe and Nicky?

Without both wanting to end up in prison over the death of abusive Adam, the sisters decide to safeguard each other and Ethan, ensuring they avoid further complications.

Chloe discovers damning details about Bill Braddock (played by Matthew Modine), a case Adam had been investigating secretly, acting as an FBI informant.

Fundamentally, Braddock was aware that the Gentry Group engaged in underhanded business practices related to human trafficking, which they used as leverage to secure smooth execution of large-scale construction projects.

In the incident where Braddock’s residence was searched and he was taken into custody, accusations of Adam’s murder were also levied against him. This was due to Chloe allegedly placing the murder weapon within Braddock’s office. As a result of these events, the sisters successfully avoided any implication in Adam’s murder.

Throughout the series, Detective Nancy (Kim Dickens) has been a persistent and somewhat irritating presence for the sisters in the background. However, her tenacity ultimately proved to be on point when it came to solving the case. She eventually managed to locate Adam’s mother and had a conversation with her. From their talk, it became clear that Nicky was aware of details about the murder before being briefed by the police – information that only someone involved in the crime would have known.

As it becomes clear that Nicky is the murderer, and Nancy wants solid proof, she learns upon her return that she’s no longer working on this case. It is revealed later that Nicky employed the private investigator hired by Katherine (for Chloe’s cyberbullying) to uncover damaging information about Nancy. This investigator discovered that on a previous case, Nancy had used excessive force and brutally injured an innocent Black man.

Instead of ignoring it, Nicky shares the confidential information with Katherine, who makes it public. Following a news article revealing Nancy’s controversial racial profiling, she is temporarily suspended from work, preventing her from continuing her investigation into whether Nicky murdered Adam.

Despite having differing opinions regarding collaborating on a memoir, Chloe reinforces her allegiance towards Nicky and Ethan, expressing that she has missed Nicky during their periods of silence. It seems that the sisters’ future is promising as they appear to be in agreement about starting a new chapter in their lives together, with the final scenes showing them on the beach together.

Does anyone die at the end of The Better Sister?

Indeed, sadly, the final scene of the series shows Gabriel Sloyer’s character, Jake, motionless and lifeless, on the sandy shore.

Despite the enigma surrounding how he met his end, it is plausible to infer that Jake might have gotten caught up in a shootout involving Braddock, potentially being fatally shot by him or one of his associates, as a result of his collaboration with the FBI.

In another scenario, it’s possible that FBI agent Olivero might have ended up causing harm to Jake, whom he was becoming progressively uneasy around. However, the idea that Olivero would prefer murder over merely having Jake incarcerated is somewhat questionable.

It’s plausible that Jake might have decided to end his life following the loss of his job, as he was anxious about his safety and under significant stress from Olivero. However, the exact reason behind Jake’s demise still remains unclear.
