Warning – Major spoilers for Sinners below
In the movie “Sinners,” directed by Ryan Coogler, there’s a unique twist on traditional vampire stories. The plot also subtly incorporates magical elements that may not be immediately apparent on initial viewing. Set in Mississippi Delta in 1932, Michael B. Jordan plays twin brothers Smoke and Stack, ex-Chicago gangsters who open a juke joint. They manage to gather funds for their venture and have a successful first night. However, their festivities are disrupted when they encounter an unexpected vampire horde, forcing them and a group of survivors to barricade themselves in the juke joint and defend against the attack until dawn breaks.
The film titled “Sinners” was met with exceptional acclaim and robust financial success during its debut weekend, adding another feather to Ryan Coogler’s cap as he continues his productive collaboration with Jordan, following the releases of “Creed” in 2015 and “Black Panther” in 2018. At first glance, “Sinners” is a chilling vampire horror film steeped in historical atmosphere, boasting intense action, fear-inducing moments, and compelling narrative. However, a lesser-discussed aspect of the movie involves the use of Hoodoo lore and magic, woven into the story through Annie (Wunmi Mosaku), a character associated with Smoke and Stack’s friendship.
Sinners Makes Some Subtle Hints To Hoodoo Magic
In the movie “Sinners“, Annie’s past as a Hoodoo witch from the delta region is subtly woven into the story, with the most significant references made in the opening sequence that explores Hoodoo practices and in Annie’s own accounts of vampires. Although not overtly stated, the film provides several hints to suggest that Annie’s powers are authentic. For instance, during her reunion with Smoke, Annie claims her magic protected them during their service in World War I and their gangster days in Chicago under Capone. A notable aspect of this scene is a distinct change in the visual and audio quality, giving it a stormy appearance. This initial transformation could be interpreted as a representation of Annie’s Hoodoo magic being tied to nature. The movie “Sinners” expands on this idea further.
In the scene, after Cornbread (Omar Miller) transforms into a vampire, it’s evident to Smoke, Stack, Annie, and others that he’s changed, such as his demand for an explicit invitation back into the club, which hints at traditional lore about vampires not being able to enter buildings without an invite. In this moment, Annie warns Smoke against granting Cornbread’s request. Although it seems like Smoke eventually complies by giving him the night’s earnings, he swiftly fends off Cornbread’s attempt to bite and convert him. While one might attribute his quick reaction to cautiousness or fast reflexes, the film suggests that Annie’s advice may have helped Smoke avoid Cornbread’s bite.
As a movie buff, I’d rephrase it like this: In the intense vampire-human showdown between Smoke and Stack in the juke joint of “Sinners”, I noticed something fascinating – Annie’s mysterious Hoodoo magic was at play. The moment when strength-boosted Stack overpowered his brother, only to be held back by Smoke, wasn’t just a simple sibling rivalry. What caught my eye was a brief but significant instance: Annie’s bag seemed to pulsate with a bright blue glow, warding off Stack from attacking Smoke further. This swift yet obvious manifestation of Annie’s Hoodoo magic in “Sinners” suggests that her magic isn’t just a myth; it’s a powerful shield against vampire attacks.
Sinners Has More Overt Hint to Magic In the Dance Scene (Strengthening the Hints to Annie’s Magic)
Instead of relying solely on Annie for hinting magic, Sinners also involves Sammie in the magical aspect. On the opening night of the juke joint, Sammie conjures spirits from past and present into the venue. The bustling musical scene of Sinners includes not only musicians from the 30s and bar-goers, but also contemporary rappers, rock musicians dressed in modern attire, individuals from various countries like Chinese acrobats, and even figures from different eras of the past.
In addition to Sammie’s account, it becomes evident that music serves as a potent gateway, connecting not only the past and present but also the realms of life and death. The movie, titled “Sinners,” takes this concept literally. Remmick, the main vampire villain played by Jack O’Connell, proposes transforming Sammie and his companions into vampires, a move that would free them from racial prejudice and earthly struggles forever. In return, he requires Sammie’s music to resurrect his deceased loved ones from Ireland. Therefore, “Sinners” primarily emphasizes the supernatural aspects surrounding Sammie’s music and the vampires, while Annie’s Hoodoo magic is subtly woven into the narrative as an intriguing detail for attentive viewers to discover.
Wunmi Mosaku Has Spoken of the Importance of Hoodoo Magic to the Story of Sinners
Beyond its subtle appearance in the series “Sinners”, Hoodoo was instrumental for Wunmi Mosaku in developing her characterization of Annie. In an interview with THR, Mosaku shared that she delved deeply into the practices and beliefs associated with Hoodoo and faith, tracing it back to Voodoo and Ifá, traditional Yoruba religion. Mosaku further explained that Hoodoo was significant in the portrayal of vampires in “Sinners”, as Annie herself admits to only having heard about vampires. She is familiar with Haints, paints her house Haint Blue, and her shop also bears this color. To better understand Annie’s beliefs and knowledge of spell casting, root work, and prayer, Mosaku conducted additional research.
In the film “Sinners”, Hoodoo played a significant role in shaping Annie’s character, yet the movie chose to present it subtly, which underscores the unique nature of this vampire story. Annie’s connection to Hoodoo gives depth to her and other characters by helping them understand the unusual qualities of the vampires they encounter. However, it also expands the magical landscape of “Sinners” beyond typical vampire lore. In this series, Hoodoo magic is as effective against vampires as silver, garlic, and sunlight, and it offers a rich tapestry for potential storylines in future installments, even though it often remains hidden from view.
