Beck is back. 

In the initial season of the show “You”, character Joe Goldberg (played by Penn Badgley) ended up killing his girlfriend Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail). However, in the series finale, the actress made a reappearance to reveal a shocking secret that ties one fresh character to the very first episode.

In the sixth episode of season five (available on Netflix from April 24), it’s me, your fangirl self, who can hardly contain the excitement! Beck makes a stunning appearance in a flashback, and here’s where it gets intriguing: turns out, Joe’s latest muse, Louise aka Brontë (played by the talented Madeline Brewer), had a personal connection with Beck. It seems that Beck was her writing mentor, nurturing her talent, pushing her work forward, and even presenting her with a special, personally inscribed copy of Jane Eyre penned by the one and only Charlotte Brontë. This touching gesture appears to be the source of Louise’s nickname, adding an extra layer of intrigue to their relationship.

In the scene, Beck praises Louise by saying, “Your ability to delve deep into the minds of your characters, even those who appear beyond redemption, is remarkable. It feels like a powerful form of understanding, and it’s truly impressive.

After Louise dismisses the praise as overly kind, Beck firmly responds, “Please don’t undermine my compliment by downplaying it. Instead, embrace it and understand that I genuinely believe you excel at this.

Louise replies, “No one has ever supported my writing like you do, and I wanted you to understand the impact of that. Prior to our meeting, I was considering giving up on moving here, pursuing creative writing. But your encouragement helped me see the value in continuing.

Afterward, she admits that she is leaving school to go back to Ohio to look after her sick mother. However, she emphasizes that she will always remember the help and support Beck has given her.

Beck advises, “Take care of your family duties as needed, but never let go of your affection for this place. I can tell how vibrant and alive you are when we’re working together. It would be a pity if that spark were to fade away.

The author dedicates her copy of Jane Eyre to Louise, using the famous quote, “I’m not a captive bird, and no trap can hold me. I am a free human being, exercising my own will to move on from you.

When news of Beck’s passing reaches the national level, Louise suspects that his boyfriend, Joe, might have played a role in it. This suspicion sparks her to team up with online detectives in an attempt to dig into Joe’s potentially dark past and unravel the mystery of his alleged involvement in the murder.

As a dedicated follower, I discovered in season five that Lail’s reappearance unveiled a significant truth about Louise’s intentions: She didn’t serendipitously encounter Joe at Mooney’s bookstore, but rather orchestrated their meeting as part of a carefully planned scheme with her online companions. This group included the son of Dr. Nicky, whom Joe had framed for Beck’s murder, and they had been monitoring Joe’s activities throughout the series with the ultimate objective of bringing him to justice. In a first-time change, season 10 is introducing a novel competition structure known as the Tournament of All Stars over 12 episodes. The queens will be organized into three groups of six, each group competing separately across three episodes. Following the conclusion of each group’s competition, the top three queens with the highest scores will progress to the semi-finals, where they’ll face off against the leading queens from the other groups in another intense battle over two episodes.
