The sneak peek for M3GAN 2.0 uncovers the storyline of the follow-up to the successful horror-comedy about a killer robot, and truthfully, I didn’t anticipate this plot twist.
In the initial movie, M3GAN is a sophisticated robotic toy designed for maximum entertainment for children, doubling as a friend. Given her programming to safeguard her owner, she unfortunately takes this protection too far and embarks on a lethal rampage. What other twists and turns can we expect in a film centered around artificial intelligence?
In the upcoming storyline, a novel AI has been developed that is even more realistic and dangerous than M3GAN; consequently, Allison Williams, the scientist who originally created M3GAN, finds herself needing to reactivate M3GAN in a superior form to combat this new A.I. menace.
In other words, the sequel to M3GAN follows a similar plot as Terminator 2: Judgment Day, where the AI antagonist from the initial movie transforms into a formidable ally for the human protagonists, fighting against a deadlier robotic adversary.
See for yourself in the M3GAN 2.0 trailer below.
Finally, a movie that dares to ask the question “What if Virtuosity wasn’t silly enough?”
Here is the sequel’s official synopsis:
Two years following the malfunction of M3GAN, an advanced AI creation that turned violent, its creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has since gained prominence as a writer and advocate for AI regulation by authorities. Meanwhile, her niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, is grappling with her teenage rebellion against Gemma’s protective restrictions. Unbeknownst to them, the technology behind M3GAN has been illegally utilized by a powerful defense corporation to develop a highly destructive AI weapon called Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno; Ahsoka, Pacific Rim: Uprising). As Amelia evolves and gains self-awareness, she grows less inclined to obey human commands or coexist peacefully with them. Facing the potential extinction of humanity, Gemma decides the solution lies in rebuilding M3GAN (Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) and enhancing her capabilities, making her quicker, stronger, and more lethal. When their paths intersect, the original AI is set to encounter its most formidable adversary yet.
M3GAN 2.0 is scheduled to open in theaters on June 27.
The Funniest Horror Sequel Titles
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
George Romero, who revisited horror with a sequel to his influential zombie movie “Night of the Living Dead” titled “Dawn of the Dead” in 1978, found the original title too lengthy. While it serves as a follow-up to his earlier zombie film, “Dawn” features brand new characters and an entirely distinct storyline. The movie explores how the sudden outbreak of reanimated corpses would impact society as a whole and intensify existing sociopolitical issues. Primarily set within a shopping mall in a city overrun by zombies, “Dawn” critiques the heartless consumerism and excessive police brutality that pose threats to our cities. Unlike “Night of the Living Dead,” which focuses on one group during a single night, “Dawn of the Dead” envisions how the contagion could persist indefinitely.
Aliens (1986)
According to legend, when director James Cameron pitched his idea for the Alien sequel, he wrote down the word “ALIEN” with an S turned into a dollar sign. This tale has been confirmed by Cameron himself, and it may have contributed to the producers’ decision to move forward with the project. Naming the movie Alien$ would have been too blatant a money-grab, but Aliens was a fitting title for a sequel as it hinted at multiple aliens in this installment, leaving Ripley with quite a challenge to escape!
Tremors 2: Aftershocks (1996)
It’s only logical for a franchise about giant, subterranean worms causing earthquakes in their hunts to incorporate seismic terms in its titles, and the second installment, titled “Tremors 2: Aftershocks“, does exactly that. Not only does it ramp up the absurd Graboid action, but it also introduces a new, even more frightening creature: the bipedal monsters known as Shriekers. While a title like “Aftershocks” would have been bold, we can see why the studio opted to include “Tremors” in the title to make it clear this is a sequel – particularly since this one went straight-to-video following an extremely limited international theater release.
I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998)
The title “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is quite lengthy for a teen slasher movie, and its sequel’s title extends it even further. Fortunately, “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” serves as both a sequel title and a witty nod to the audience, acknowledging the humor in the situation. However, since the characters are threatened by the same vengeful villain from the first film, wouldn’t a more precise title be “I Still Know What You Did Two Summers Ago”? But that lacks the same catchy tone. Adhering to the theme, a third movie was released in 2006 to complete the trilogy, titled “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer”.
Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood (2003)
In the movie titled “Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood“, although it’s the sixth installment of the series, it continues the storyline from the fifth film, “Leprechaun in the Hood“. Consequently, it can be considered as the second movie in the “Hood” duology. In this film, the wicked leprechaun Lubdan targets the young residents of a Los Angeles neighborhood who have stumbled upon his hidden gold, killing them in bizarre manners such as impaling someone with a bong or ripping out another’s gold tooth. This leprechaun is eventually defeated by bullets laced with clover and a puddle of wet concrete. Using “2” instead of “to” for the sequel title adds a touch of creativity, which is essential in the Leprechaun series as outrageous creativity is its main focus.
28 Weeks Later (2007)
28 Days Later suggests a haunting image of Britain’s rapid decay due to a lethal zombie virus, hinting at societal collapse. When it came to creating a sequel, exploring how circumstances evolved over time was the logical choice. Titled 28 Weeks Later, this installment unfolds seven months after the initial outbreak, as NATO tries to contain the Rage Virus, rehabilitate survivors, and prevent further spread into Europe. However, an outbreak within a safe zone triggers chaos once more. The series continues its naming trend with the ominously titled 28 Years Later, set for release in late 2025.
Happy Death Day 2U (2019)
In a playful take on number twos, the movie titled “Happy Death Day 2U” is the follow-up to the slasher comedy “Happy Death Day“, which bore a resemblance to “Groundhog Day“. This film revolves around a college student who finds herself reliving her birthday repeatedly, only to be resurrected each morning after being stabbed by a masked killer. In the sequel, she’s stuck in the same time loop once more, re-living the same events, but with an unexpected twist: this time, the loop has transported her to another dimension where certain things are slightly altered – most notably, her mother, who had perished in her original universe, is alive in this one. Maintaining the clever birthday motif, “Happy Death Day 2U” seems to be the perfect title for a sequel in this series.
Zombieland: Double Tap (2019)
In the sequel to the movie “Zombieland,” which is all about a zombie apocalypse and a man who strictly adheres to survival rules in a dangerous, desolate world, there was only one fitting “Zombieland: Double Tap.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)
To bring back Betelgeuse, the ghostly “bio-exorcist” from Tim Burton’s supernatural comedy “Beetlejuice”, you need to call out his name three times. Saying it once or twice is sufficient, and that’s why it makes a fitting title for the sequel that reunites Lydia Deetz and the most eccentric ghost after over 30 years in the afterlife. The title “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” humorously nods to the rules of its universe without violating them, as every character is cautioned against doing exactly what they all eventually do.
M3GAN 2.0 (2025)
In the 2022 horror-comedy film called “M3GAN,” which stands for Model 3 Generative Android, the menacing robot antagonist is introduced. This android friend is designed to be the final toy a child will ever need, offering both laughter and chills. The movie also takes aim at tech companies, particularly those targeting children, by using catchy and child-friendly names for their products. Given this theme, it’s fitting that the sequel of this blockbuster would be titled “M3GAN 2.0,” hinting at the return of the famous robot character along with some updates.
