Over the course of three and a half decades, The Simpsons has built its reputation by starting each episode with unique couch gags, but surprisingly, there are fewer of these intro sequences than one might expect after so many years on air. Currently, the show is airing the second part of Season 36 and has been renewed for four additional seasons as a result of an extraordinary agreement with Fox. As the series prepares to carry on into the future towards Season 40, there’s no doubt that we can expect even more couch gags to set the stage for the comedic chaos ahead in each new episode.
As of now, there have been 784 episodes of “The Simpsons” that have been released so far, with Season 36 currently airing its 15th episode. However, if you consider only the unique couch gags (excluding those with minor alterations or repeated appearances), you might be surprised to find that there are fewer than expected for the entire series. To be precise, when counting each unique couch gag across the 36 seasons, we find a total of 456. This number represents more than half (over 58%) of the history of this animated series.

This tally doesn’t account for any unique transformations in the show’s opening sequences because those are distinct from the regular couch gags. The Simpsons family typically enter their house and sit on the couch, but something unusual always occurs. It’s worth noting that these analyses reveal some intriguing patterns as we approach later seasons of this animated show.
The Simpsonsβ Couch Gags Have Become Less Important
Reflecting on the couch gags from The Simpsons over time, it’s noticeable that there are fewer unique ones in recent years compared to earlier periods. Starting around the 20s, The Simpsons started to avoid repeating couch gags altogether. In earlier seasons, some classic episodes would reuse a specific couch gag multiple times within the same season, but this practice diminished significantly during the high-definition era. Instead, many of the openings were shortened considerably to accommodate more story content in each episode.
Instead of continually reusing them, they would eliminate the opportunities for the couch gags completely. This decision resulted in longer episodes since the opening theme sequence consumes significant time from the usual 21-22 minutes per story. It’s worth mentioning as one of the numerous changes the series has undergone over the years. Notably, more than half of The Simpsons‘ episodes have started with a distinct couch gag, making for an impressive run so far. As the show approaches Season 40, it seems likely that even more will be added in the future.
