You Won’t Believe How Long the Serpent Society Was Teasing a Captain America Movie

In the highly anticipated movie “Captain America: Brave New World,” the Serpent Society, a group of villains with a snake theme, make their live-action debut, under the control of the wicked Seth Voelker/Sidewinder, portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito. This sinister crew was first introduced in Captain America comic #310, published in October 1985. Over time, they have been a persistent thorn in the side of every version of Captain America. Given their history, it seemed only natural that this band of serpent-themed antagonists would eventually join the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s adaptation of the superhero.

Interestingly enough, Brave New World isn’t the initial instance where the Serpent Society has connected with Captain America’s mythos within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Although these connections didn’t play out on the big screen in movie theaters worldwide, they did happen as early as 2014, a full decade before the blockbuster hit our screens everywhere. In that year, two unique events connected the Serpent Society and Captain America within the MCU.

WARNING: Spoilers below for Captain America: Brave New World

That Serpent Society Video Game Appearance

In the early 2010s, when the Marvel Cinematic Universe was at its peak, the era of video games based on major movies was starting to decline. For instance, the game based on “The Avengers” (2012) never got released. The remaining examples were mobile games tied to Phase Two projects like “Iron Man 3” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”. This game introduced many non-canonical Marvel villains who targeted Steve Rogers/Captain America, such as Sin, Taskmaster, and various members of the Serpent Society including King Cobra, Diamondback, and Puff Adder.

The Serpent Society’s launch wasn’t particularly successful, and this was highlighted by the numerous inconsistencies between the movie, “The Winter Soldier,” and its source material (specifically, the way Rogers and Sam Wilson meet). It seemed clear that this portrayal of the Serpent Society was not a part of the main storyline. However, looking back more than a decade later, it’s interesting to contrast this version of the Serpent Society with their depiction in “Brave New World.” The key difference lies in the costumes: while the characters in the “Winter Soldier” game wear vibrant snake-inspired outfits as seen in the comics, those in “Brave New World” have a more muted and realistic costume design.

In this video game, the Serpent Society was portrayed as equally formidable alongside other Marvel villains such as Sin and Taskmaster. Conversely, in “Brave New World”, Sidewinder serves as a mere underling for The Buyer (Samuel Sterns/The Leader). His subordinates, however, are quickly dispatched by Sam Wilson (Captain America). In the movies, the power of the Serpent Society has significantly decreased. It’s possible that Sidewinder may eventually wear attire similar to those of the Winter Soldier when he keeps his word to Wilson about escaping prison.

The Fake Serpent Society Movie

Approximately six months following their appearance in the Captain America: The Winter Soldier video game, the Serpent Society resurfaced in connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Captain America. This notable link took place during Kevin Feige’s grand presentation at El Capitan Theatre in October 2014, where he announced several Phase Three projects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe due for release from 2016 onwards. One of the first productions unveiled was the title of the previously undisclosed third Captain America movie, set to premiere on May 6, 2016.

Initially, Feige casually suggested the title was Captain America: Serpent Society, but it turned out to be a decoy. In reality, he intended to surprise everyone by bringing Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., and Chadwick Boseman on stage at the end of the event to announce that Captain America: Civil War would launch in summer 2016. The name Serpent Society, for a brief moment, appeared as if it could be a genuine title for a Captain America film, but MCU fans soon joked about it.

In retrospect, it was indeed the year when Marvel Studios managed to make Rocket Raccoon and Groot as familiar as your next-door neighbors through the first “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie. It wasn’t surprising that the focus shifted towards transforming the Serpent Society into formidable cinematic villains. Alas, that never materialized, but it took more than a decade for one of Captain America’s most recurring adversaries to make their canonical MCU debut. Yet, even in 2014, there were glimpses of the Serpent Society, subtly intertwined with the Captain America franchise. These brief appearances serve as testament to the deep-rooted connection these adversaries have with Cap’s storyline. Furthermore, the inclusion of Sidewinder and company in “Brave New World” can be seen as a long-awaited development, considering their role in Aldous Huxley’s novel.

Captain America: Brave New World is now playing in theaters.
