The star-studded lineup for the movie version of Tomi Adeyemi’s “Children of Blood and Bone” has been revealed.
In January 2027, the forthcoming fantasy movie will feature a dynamic cast led by recognizable stars such as Thuso Mbedu (from The Woman King), Amandla Stenberg (The Acolyte), Damson Idris (Snowfall) and Tosin Cole (Doctor Who).
In simpler terms, Mbedu’s character, named Zelie, is a young woman residing in Africa. She embarks on an adventure to reclaim the magic that once belonged to her kingdom, Orïsha, which was taken away by King Saran, portrayed by Chiwetel Ejiofor.
The narrative unfolds around Zelie and her elder sibling, Cole (previously known as Tzain), who join forces with Amari (now Stenberg), Saran’s daughter, and her brother Inan (formerly Idris).
The movie will feature Viola Davis from How to Get Away with Murder playing Mama Agba, Cynthia Erivo known for Wicked in the role of Admiral Kaea, Idris Elba best recognized for Hijack as Lekan, and Lashana Lynch famed for The Day of the Jackal portraying Jumoke.
Or, more concisely: Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Idris Elba (Hijack), and Lashana Lynch (The Day of the Jackal) are part of the cast, taking on roles as Mama Agba, Admiral Kaea, Lekan, and Jumoke respectively.
Stepping into the director’s chair for this film is none other than Gina Prince-Bythewood, fresh from helming “The Woman King”. With a heart brimming with honor and excitement, she shares her mission to breathe life into Tomi Adeyemi’s “Children of Blood and Bone” and the captivating realm of Orisha. Our remarkable cast, mirroring the rich tapestry of the diaspora, is where the enchanting magic resides in this story.
As reported by Variety, discussions are ongoing for Regina King (known as Shirley), Diaana Babnicova (recognized from The Famous Five), and Bukky Bakray (familiar as Rocks) to assume the roles of Queen Nehanda, Folake, and Binta respectively.
More auditions will be held after a public call for Nigerian actors, with filming scheduled to start in South Africa within the next few weeks.
