Warning: massive spoilers for Sinners are in play!
Ryan Coogler’s latest film, “Sinners“, took things a step further than just being a typical “vampire movie” when it premiered on the 2025 movie schedule. What made it stand out was not only its impressive storyline but also the unexpected prospect of a potential continuation featuring Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s successful collaboration once again.
Expressing a blend of eagerness and trepidation, I find myself compelled to share these emotions with you all. Therefore, for those who haven’t experienced the charm of “Sinners“, this serves as your last chance. Moving forward, brace yourself as we delve into the intricate details, uncovering the reasons why this twist is so unexpected.
Sinners’ Epilogue Left A Surprising Twist For Potential Sequels
As the movie “Sinners” reaches its daybreak, Sammie Moore (Miles Caton) remains the sole figure standing. With nothing but his guitar neck and significant facial scars from his defeated adversary Remmick (Jack O’Connell), he decides to follow his heart towards the realm of Blues music.
Decades after that decision made him famous, we find ourselves joining him at his most recent performance, where, with age, Sammie (Buddy Guy) has become. As the concert ends and he relaxes with a drink, an unexpected pair, Mary (Hailee Steinfeld) and Stack (Michael B. Jordan), appear.
It transpired that they lived through the year 1932 because Smoke (or Jordan) failed to slay his twin brother, who was a vampire associated with the group known as “Sinners.” However, the Sinners’ twin was given mercy at a price: he vowed never to harm Sammie. In the end, the twins made an ultimatum of eternal life, dressed in ’90s street fashion evoking the early rap era, which marked the conclusion and another separation of all parties.

Mary And Stack’s Survival Leaves The Door Wide Open For A Sinners Sequel
Six decades is quite an extensive span, encompassing not just the storyline but also the cultural ties embedded within “Sinners.” Exploring Mary and Stack’s musical odyssey across different genres in search of one that could break through barriers certainly sounds intriguing. Ryan Coogler’s tale in this potential series opener suggests that there’s definitely rich material ripe for deeper examination.
In another take on the subject, various musical genres such as Motown and disco would be open for interpretation, drawing parallels with vampirism to symbolize cultural appropriation in music. To add depth to this imaginative canvas, consider delving into how characters Mary and Stack might ultimately prove to be good-hearted individuals. This narrative twist also provides an opportunity to delve deeper into their relationship dynamics.
It’s well-known that Stack made a promise to Smoke in Club Juke way back in 1932, but promises from eternal beings who feed on the living aren’t always set in stone. Moving on to more human matters, let me share my concerns about what the upcoming movie Sinners 2 might explore. Furthermore, the notion of Jimi Hendrix battling vampires at Woodstock alongside Mary and Stack has been lingering in my mind since I watched it.

Sinners Is Such A Singularly Moving Experience, Which Puts Intense Pressure On A Sequel
seldom does an original tale captivate the globe as Sinners is poised to do, but that’s just my biased viewpoint, given the acclaim it has received. However, based on current information, Ryan Coogler didn’t plan for a new series to emerge from his creation.
If a box office is welcoming and viewers are eager for more, the next project will undoubtedly face high expectations, as it will need to measure up to its predecessor’s success. A comparable scenario occurred with Coogler’s 2022 Marvel film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but it should be noted that this movie faced a challenging situation due to the unfortunate passing of Chadwick Boseman.
Regarding the complex production of “Black Panther 2,” the audience and critical reception towards “Wakanda Forever” wasn’t as unanimously positive as the initial release in 2018 received. Watching “Sinners” for the first time feels similar to experiencing “Jurassic Park” or Chadwick Boseman’s Marvel Cinematic Universe debut on opening night, and following up that excitement with another film can be quite challenging.

Buddy Guy Ties Together Sinners’ Cultural Message In A Way That’d Be Very Hard To Repeat
It’s likely one of the highest compliments I can give to Miles Caton, the standout performer in “Sinners”, that his character grows up to be portrayed by Blues legend Buddy Guy. This could only have been achieved through Caton’s exceptional musical talents and acting skills, much like how Jamie Foxx managed to impress Ray Charles when he was cast as him in “Ray”.
The underlying theme in the work Sinners closely relates to the idea expressed by Annie (Wunmi Moskau) that exceptional musicians possess a talent capable of transcending temporal and spatial boundaries. In the hypothetical scenario of a sequel, Sinners 2, Jimi Hendrix could be seen as an embodiment of such a figure, given his legendary status in the realm of rock ‘n’ roll.
Regrettably, since the iconic guitarist passed away in 1970, there arises an uneasy prospect for a tricky continuation. Conceptually, this concept could still hold merit; however, it would seem odd or disrespectful to portray an actor as Mr. Hendrix, or to alter history and depict him surviving a vampire encounter and dying later.

While using the metaphor of vampirism for cultural exploitation and corruption might help make a tragic ending in a hypothetical sequel to Sinners more plausible, it’s crucial to handle this sensitively. It’s not appropriate to simply attach a supernatural element to real-life tragedies – even though the portrayal of the JFK assassination in X-Men: Days of Future Past might seem to contradict this.
I strongly urge you not to miss this horror comedy; it’s absolutely worthy of your attention. The transition from the initial whispers about “Ryan Coogler’s secret project” to the final product on screen has been nothing short of delightful. Not all films garner the acclaim that Sinners‘ critical response did, so it’s not surprising that the director of Fruitvale Station seems to be in tune with current trends. If you’ve managed to read this far without watching it first and are even slightly intrigued by what’s at stake, I suggest you make a trip to the cinema as soon as possible.
