You Won’t Believe This Character Returned in The Last Of Us!

One standout aspect of HBO’s version of “The Last of Us” is its clever departure from being a direct reenactment. Recognizing that the games are well-established and many viewers have likely played them, the creators opt for an unpredictable approach to keep audiences engaged. They achieve this by delving into less prominent characters from the games and providing them with new companions or adversaries. A notable instance of this is Eugene, who perishes before Season 2 of the HBO series starts but continues to influence through his wife, Gail. Although she doesn’t exist in the games, she significantly enriches the cast and assumes a vital role, much like another character introduced in Season 2, Episode 4, titled “Day One.

In “Day One,” the narrative initially centers around Isaac Dixon, formerly a sergeant in FEDRA, who makes a drastic decision to defect to the Washington Liberation Front (WLF). To emphasize his brutal nature, he executes most of his subordinates with a grenade. Yet, there’s an exception – one soldier is given a choice, and this pivotal moment sets the stage for a significant event in the storyline later on.

Isaac Shows All of His Cards in The Last of Us Season 2

In the series The Last of Us, it never holds back on depicting the harshness and cruelty that humanity can inflict upon one another. During Season 1, David exhibits a chilling willingness to commit heinous acts against Ellie, while Season 2 delves into the escalating conflict between the Scars and the WLF in Seattle, showcasing how their struggle is growing increasingly twisted. The premiere episode, “Day One,” also focuses on FEDRA, a ruthless group who don’t hesitate to make light of those they’re supposed to be safeguarding. A squad led by Isaac, in an armored vehicle, cracks jokes as their power goes to their heads. Before leaving the vehicle, Isaac confronts them about their callous behavior and meets up with a WLF contact. However, before dooming everyone, Isaac requests that Burton, one soldier who still seems to possess some humanity, step outside with him. Isaac then kills all of the others and gives Burton the choice to either join the WLF or face death. The show ends without revealing Burton’s decision, but a brief scene later in the episode provides insight into his predicament.

Currently, Isaac is in a position of power, mercilessly questioning a Seraphite for details about their planned assaults against the WLF. His disenchantment with the world seems more profound than it was during the flashback, making him all the more dangerous. The soldier outside the door’s expression reflects this, but his fellow ally nearby offers no comfort. To Isaac’s surprise, the other soldier is not the same boy from his FEDRA days, which were eleven years ago. Instead, he encounters Burton, who has changed significantly since then.

Survival Comes at the Cost of Humanity in The Last of Us

During the first season of The Last of Us, Joel openly admits that he and his brother Tommy had committed unspeakable acts during the initial outbreak period. The horrors were so intense that Tommy was forced to abandon his only loved one, unable to bear it any longer. Over time, Joel reforms himself but his dark past remains a constant presence, influencing Ellie as well. The universe of The Last of Us is ruthless and those who are good often don’t make it through. At that moment in time, Burton might not have fully grasped this, but his chances of staying alive if he didn’t join Isaac were minimal. Although Burton chooses the path that ensures his survival, in essence, he strikes a bargain with the devil.

As a movie enthusiast, I find it heart-wrenching when the narrative catches up with Burton in contemporary times, his eyes, once ablaze with passion, now lack that sparkle. The gunshot echoing from another room leaves him unfazed, and he casually refers to Isaac’s Scar as a “beast.” This scene is tough to endure, yet it’s crucial because Ellie finds herself grappling with the same dilemma as Burton at the episode’s outset: whether to tread the path of righteousness or succumb to the shadows.

The Last of Us Season 2 is streaming on Max.
