You Won’t Believe What FX Just Announced

The much-awaited TV series “Alien: Earth” by FX has finally set its debut date, with the Xenomorphs invading human territory starting on Tuesday, August 12th. The news was released together with the show’s intriguing summary and captivating initial images displaying the main cast, including Sydney Chandler as Wendy, a synthetic hybrid. This eight-episode production, led by renowned creator Noah Hawley (of “Fargo” and “Legion” fame), takes the franchise in a new direction, bringing the terrifying creatures directly to Earth and setting the story in 2120, only two years before the ill-fated journey of the USCSS Nostromo in the iconic 1979 film “Alien.

In the year 2120, Earth is ruled by five dominant corporations: Prodigy, notorious Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic, and Threshold. This future is characterized by extreme capitalism, where cyborgs and artificial life forms are commonplace. However, the head of Prodigy Corporation makes a groundbreaking discovery by creating Hybrids – humanoid robots imbued with real human thoughts, challenging the boundaries between synthetic and biological entities in a ruthless pursuit of eternal life. The first of these Hybrids is Wendy, whose creation signifies a significant leap in technological advancement.

The universe is irrevocably altered when an enigmatic Weyland-Yutani space exploration vessel, known as the USCSS Maginot, inexplicably crash-lands onto Prodigy City, releasing its lethal contents. This calamitous incident thrusts Wendy and a band of combat soldiers into a harrowing struggle for existence, as they uncover that the ship harbored horrifying life forms far beyond anyone’s worst nightmares.

As a passionate fan, I’ve just had a thrilling peek at the star-studded cast of this upcoming series, and it’s beyond exciting! Among them is Wendy, played by Chandler’s own, alongside Timothy Olyphant as Kirsh, Alex Lawther as Hermit, Samuel Blenkin as Boy Kavalier, Babou Ceesay as Morrow, Adrian Edmondson as Atom Eins, David Rysdahl as Arthur Sylvia, Essie Davis as Dame Sylvia, and Sandra Yi Sencindiver as Yutani. Yutani’s presence could potentially tie her to the infamous corporation we all know too well.

The ensemble also includes Lily Newmark (Nibs), Erana James (Curly), Adarsh Gourav (Slightly), Jonathan Ajayi (Smee), Kit Young (Tootles), Diêm Camille (Siberian), and Moe Bar-El (Rashidi). This suggests a large group bracing themselves against the Xenomorph threat. Interestingly, several character names (Wendy, Tootles, Smee, Slightly, Nibs, Curly) seem to be nods to characters from Peter Pan, adding an intriguing layer to the series.

Xenomorphs Invade a Futuristic Earth Ruled by Corporations in Alien: Earth

By shifting the Alien saga to Earth, I’m helping to redefine its core dynamics that have been shaping the franchise for more than four decades. Rather than lonely space stations or barren alien landscapes, Hawley is bringing terror closer to home by locating the Xenomorph danger within the heart of human society – specifically, the corporate-dominated metropolis of Prodigy City. This decision perfectly aligns with the franchise’s underlying themes about class struggle and the glaring inequalities in this future world. Moreover, the possibility of a global infestation and societal collapse on Earth itself significantly escalates the risks compared to earlier episodes.

For me, as a long-time enthusiast, the intriguing detail that grabs my attention is the setting in 2120, a mere two years before the Nostromo crew responds to the distress signal from the derelict ship on LV-426, as portrayed in “Alien.” This series could potentially reshape the backstory of Weyland-Yutani’s fixation on the Xenomorph. Was the corporation aware of these creatures prior to issuing Special Order 937? Could the crash of the USCSS Maginot be the first encounter with this species, perhaps igniting the clandestine orders that would eventually lead to the demise of Ellen Ripley’s crew? The inclusion of a character named Yutani only serves to deepen this mystery, hinting at a possible glimpse into the inner workings of the company’s upper echelons as this nightmare unfolds.

Additionally, let’s not forget about the monsters themselves. Previous previews showcase the persistent Facehuggers and brief glimpses of the classic Xenomorphs, suggesting the franchise’s signature gory body horror and spine-chilling creature design. The teasers for Alien: Earth also hint at new species, such as an eight-legged beast. It seems that the Xenomorph is not the only creature that Weyland-Yutani has been investigating in space.

The first episodes of Alien: Earth are set to air simultaneously on Tuesday, August 12th, at 8 p.m. ET. You can watch it live on Hulu and the FX linear channel at that time. For those outside the U.S., the series premiere will be available on Disney+ the same day. After the initial launch, a new episode will become available every Tuesday, with the same time slots on both Hulu and FX.
