The boxing world has lost a legend.
George Foreman, a former two-time heavyweight boxing champion and Olympic gold medalist, has passed away at the age of 76, as confirmed by his family via social media.
On March 21st, it was announced with deep sadness on Foreman’s official Instagram that George Edward Foreman Sr., a cherished figure to us all, had passed away peacefully, enveloped by the love of his family, on March 21, 2025.
The athlete was not just a sports figure, but also a deeply religious individual, a committed spouse, a caring parent, and a proud grandparent and great-grandparent. They emphasized his enduring impact by stating, “He led a life characterized by steadfast faith, humility, and a strong sense of purpose.
He was a renowned individual, having been a humanitarian, an Olympic athlete, and a two-time world heavyweight champion. He was highly respected, known as a beacon of goodness, a disciplined man with strong convictions, always vigilant in guarding his reputation. His primary focus was to safeguard his honorable name for the sake of his family.
They expressed, “We appreciate all the love and prayers that have been shown. We humbly request seclusion at this time as we celebrate the remarkable life of a man who was a precious part of ours.
In the 1960s, a man known as “Big George” gained prominence in the boxing sphere. This was when he secured a gold medal at the age of 19 during the 1968 Olympics held in Mexico City. By the close of 1971, having amassed 32 victories without a single defeat, he had climbed to become the top contender worldwide for boxing’s top title. Two years later, in a knockout match against the reigning World Heavyweight Champion, Joe Frazier, he successfully claimed the championship.
After successfully defending his title twice more, Foreman faced Muhammad Ali in the legendary 1974 bout known as “The Rumble in the Jungle.” This fight is widely regarded as the most-viewed live television event ever aired.
For several years after his defeat, he kept fighting in the ring, but he decided to retire from boxing in 1977. He then found fame on television, appearing in the short-lived sitcom “George,” and also becoming the endorser of the George Foreman Grill. Since its launch in 1994, over 100 million units of this grill have been sold.
In 2003, when discussing his plans with People magazine, George was advised by his lawyer: “George, it seems you’re helping others grow wealthy. Why not aim for wealth yourself?” This conversation sparked an idea in George’s mind regarding entering the product business. He went on to mention that this conversation revolved around a grill.
The individual once crowned Olympian, who exchanged vows with Mary Joan Martelly in 1985, is mourned by his spouse and eleven of his twelve offspring: Natalia, Leola, Michi, Isabella, Courtney, Georgetta, and Freeda (who passed away in 2019), as well as five sons, each named George Edward Foreman.
