In 2026, another live-action movie is set for release based on the classic 1980s cartoon show and toy line that’s still beloved today. Despite numerous attempts to bring this project to life over the years, these efforts have consistently fallen through. However, He-Man and his companions have continued to captivate audiences in various animated TV reboots. Now, it has officially been announced that the film is moving forward with a director, cast, and scheduled release date.
Recently, the franchise has seen some successful new additions, notably the ongoing Netflix animated series “Masters of the Universe: Revelation,” which continues from the original 1980s series by Filmation. So far, a big-screen blockbuster is an uncommon success for this franchise; the only live-action adaptation being the 1987 movie. However, fans are eagerly anticipating the difference four decades can make when the film releases in the summer of 2026. Here’s what we currently know about the project.
Masters of the Universe Will Tell an Original Story
The New Movie Isn’t a Part of Previous Continuity
The “Masters of the Universe” brand has grown into a vast network, encompassing comics, toys, video games, cartoons, and multiple animated series dating back to the 1980s. This expansive history poses a challenge with continuity, as various reboots essentially retell the story from their unique perspectives. Initially, He-Man and his companions were born out of a toy line, and mini-comics accompanying the action figures provided insights into their origins. Over time, the fundamental principles of Eternia were developed, along with the dynamics of its good versus evil universe.
This item offers a great deal of versatility, allowing for numerous modifications that enable individuals to personalize the asset. The first animated series from the 1980s is often seen as the foundation, with subsequent series like Masters of the Universe: Revelation and the original She-Ra: Princess of Power spin-off expanding on its world. Other franchise installments have consistently told distinct stories within their own universes, such as the critically acclaimed 2018 reboot of She-Ra and the bold The New Adventures of He-Man reboot from the early 1990s.
It’s not shocking that they’ve chosen to start fresh with the continuity for the upcoming movie based on Masters of the Universe. The large budget and summer release indicate an attempt to draw in new viewers. This strategy mirrors the 2007 approach, where a fresh storyline was used to introduce the franchise. A clean slate allows for setting up potential sequels if the first film is successful.
Prince Adam Goes to Earth
At Least Some of the Movie Will Take Place Away from Eternia
In the upcoming movie “Masters of the Universe”, much of the storyline is being kept secret, but some information has been shared. The revamped plot introduces a young boy who lands on Earth without the Sword of Grayskull to help him transform into He-Man. As he matures into an adult, he rediscovers the sword and fights for Eternia’s destiny in a way that remains undisclosed. The limited details hint that the film aims to stay true to Adam’s character and his Earthly heritage while preserving the essential elements of his origin story.
It seems that the filmmakers have gone all out in creating Prince Adam’s adventures for the cinema, given a budget of $200 million and Mattel eager to cash in on its popularity. This movie won’t be reminiscent of the 1987 film’s low-budget feel. The goal is to replicate the success of franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the hope that exploring Adam’s origins will open up opportunities for further sequels if this film succeeds. Additionally, a live-action She-Ra TV series is being developed for Netflix, and it will be another standalone universe unrelated to any previous storylines.
The Director Got His Start in Animation
Travis Knight Directed a Modern Classic Before Moving to Live-Action
It makes sense, doesn’t it, that the director of “Master of the Universe,” Travis Knight, started in animation since the series originated from a 1980s animated cartoon for kids. He gained experience with stop-motion animation, working as the main animator on films like “Coraline,” “ParaNorman,” and “The Boxtrolls” before directing “Kubo and the Two Strings” in 2016. After that, he shifted his focus to the central Autobot character and the teenager he develops a friendship with, two years later.
It seems that Knight’s past directorial work indicates he would be a fitting candidate for helming the upcoming “Masters of the Universe” film. He possesses a knack for handling established intellectual properties delicately, while still infusing them with his unique creative flair. Given the rich history and high expectations surrounding “Masters of the Universe”, this skillset will undoubtedly be crucial. Moreover, Knight’s upcoming project is ” “, starring Mark Wahlberg.
Multiple Masters of the Universe Characters Will Appear
An All-Star Cast Delivers New Versions of Old Favorites
In addition to the main storyline, several iconic He-Man figures have been confirmed for the movie, and the new take on Masters of the Universe boasts a star-studded cast to bring them to life. The film primarily focuses on the ongoing struggle between He-Man and Skeletor, with He-Man’s royal family, including his father King Randor, and the enigmatic Sorceress of Castle Grayskull playing significant roles. British actor Nicholas Galitzine takes on the dual role of Prince Adam and He-Man, while Jared Leto portrays their longtime adversary Skeletor. James Purefoy plays King Randor, with Charlotte Riley as Marlena, an Earth astronaut turned queen.
In this production, Morena Baccarin takes on the role of the Sorceress, Idris Elba portrays Duncan (Teela’s father), and Sasheer Zamata brings Suzie (Adam’s presumed Terran friend) to life. Alison Brie assumes the position of Evil-Lyn, the evil sorceress, while He-Man’s allies Ram-Man and Fisto are also cast. The crew will introduce a host of Skeletor’s henchmen, such as Beast Man, Goat Man, and Tri-Klops, and they’re keeping some unexpected characters under wraps for a surprise reveal.
Production Stills Have Been Released
Early Images Reveal Castle Grayskull and Key Characters
Filming for the movie started on January 6, 2025, with an undisclosed end date. Nevertheless, some photos from the set have been leaked, together with at least one promotional picture. Amazon MGM has released a snapshot showing He-Man’s hands holding the Power Sword, and it seems that the portrayal is true to the original version of the character.
9th April, on social media platforms, a picture emerged showcasing the entrance of Castle Grayskull with several recognizable characters. Given the nature of such projects, there is extensive use of Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI). Consequently, most actors are filmed against green screens. However, the distinctive “Jawbridge” of the castle stands out clearly. Zack Snyder’s Skeletor, carrying his Havoc staff with its trademark ram-skull head, is visible, along with another character wielding what looks like Evil-Lyn’s staff. Additionally, Noah Centineo’s Adam can be seen, seemingly held captive by Skeletor’s guards, and an actor wearing a rig for a CGI creature to be added later is also present.
