Get ready, sports anime enthusiasts! This year is set to ignite your passion as a new series titled “Hyakuemu” is set to hit theaters this autumn. The craze for sports anime shows no signs of slowing down, with productions like “Haikyu!!“, “Hajime no Ippo“, “Blue Box“, basketball-themed “Slam Dunk“, and soccer-focused “Blue Lock” becoming global sensations. Now, it’s time to shine the spotlight on a contemporary track and field anime that deserves recognition.
The manga titled “Hyakuemu,” penned by Uoto, who is also known for his work on “Orb: On the Movements of the Earth,” was initially published in Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket app and website in November 2018. It ran for nearly a year until August 2019, marking a relatively brief run. If you are a regular reader at egmr.ru, you might recall our recent piece on the first movie trailer. Now, we are excited to announce that “Hyakuemu” has finally been given its US theatrical release date.
Hyakuemu Sprints Into Theaters This Fall
Initially, when the poster, trailer, and main crew and cast of “Hyakuemu” were unveiled, American fans could only anticipate the Japanese release date (September 19th). However, good news! GKIDS will be distributing this movie in countries like the US and UK, which means we won’t have to wait long after Japan before enjoying the thrilling action and emotional drama of “Hyakuemu” on our cinema screens.
Excitedly speaking here, I can’t wait for me to catch “Hyakuemu” in US theaters this coming October! The GKIDS’ official website has hinted at its release, but they haven’t specified an exact date yet. Fingers crossed that it drops early in October, which means we won’t have to dodge online spoilers for long after the Japanese premiere!
What is Hyakuemu About?
Back in the days, I was thoroughly captivated by “Hyakuemu,” a story that revolves around the thrilling world of athletics, with a particular focus on the exhilarating 100m dash. This manga chronicles the journey of two teenage sprinters, bound by their shared passion for speed and camaraderie. However, as life took them down different paths, fate brought them back together – this time not as friends, but as fierce rivals on the track.
As an animation enthusiast, I can hardly contain my excitement! The drama and athletic scenes are bound to be thrilling, but what truly sets this movie apart is its exceptional animation. Masterfully crafted by Studio Rock ‘n’ Roll Mountain under the visionary direction of Kenji Iwaisawa, the animation promises to steal the show.
The unique quality of the animation in the trailer isn’t just a fluke; it’s the result of an innovative technique called rotoscoping. This process involves animators tracing over live-action footage, giving the races a dynamic and realistic feel that sets this sports anime apart from the rest.
100 METERS is a movie about Togashi, a born runner, who effortlessly wins every 100-meter race as a child. However, in sixth grade, he encounters Komiya, a diligent transfer student lacking finesse. Through teaching him, Togashi provides Komiya with a driving force – to triumph no matter the obstacles. Time passes, and they cross paths once more, this time as track competitors, revealing their true personalities.
