YOU WON’T BELIEVE Who Just Passed Away at 49

America is mourning the loss of a trailblazer.

Mia Love, who made history as the first Black Republican congresswoman when she was elected to serve Utah’s 4th Congressional District in 2014, passed away at her home in Saratoga Springs on March 23 after a prolonged fight with cancer. She was 49 years old.

As I pen these words with a heart brimming with gratitude for the profound impact Mia has left on ours lives, I feel compelled to share that she peacefully departed from this world today. She was enveloped by family in the comfort of her home. Amidst a joyous commemoration of her life and an outpouring of cherished memories, Mia gracefully released the ties of mortality and, as her wisdom and spirit always did, ascended towards the heavens.

The message expressed gratitude for all the kind thoughts, sympathies, and blessings being sent our way. For now, we’re spending time together as a family and will share details about the funeral and a public memorial event in the near future.

In 2022, Mia was diagnosed with a form of brain cancer known as glioblastoma. Throughout her fight against this disease, she drew strength from her religious beliefs and immunotherapy treatments that were part of a clinical trial. Despite this, she faced the reality that her cancer no longer responded to treatment. In her final days, Mia, who had previously served in Congress, expressed one last hope for the nation’s future.

In a heartfelt message recently featured on Deseret News on March 11th, Mia penned her thoughts to dear friends, fellow Americans, and Utahns alike. Instead of bidding farewell, she wanted to convey gratitude and share her heartfelt wish for you and the America we both hold dear.

She went on to say, “My fight against brain cancer is drawing to a close. The illness no longer responds to therapy, so my loved ones and I are concentrating on cherishing each moment and creating lasting memories during this precious time.

Drawing from her upbringing as a child of Haitian immigrants, Mia outlined the aspects she thought embody America’s greatness: a nation characterized by generosity, resilience in making difficult decisions, and deeply rooted in perseverance.

Mia penned this article not as a ‘last request,’ but more casually, given my background in drama. I’m unsure how long this phase of my struggle will last, and I feel compelled to express, and re-express, some deeply held beliefs to the world. So, I’m writing this as my ‘ongoing wish’ and ‘hopeful legacy’ for you.

I earnestly hope and deeply desire for both you and this country that the America I’ve experienced is the one you strive to protect,” she finished. “May every citizen and every leader work together so that the America we recognize can be passed down to our grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
