In 2002’s “Star Trek: Nemesis”, Kate Mulgrew’s Admiral Janeway from “Star Trek: Voyager” helped the series secure a long-desired accolade that it had been striving for since the first film featuring the cast of “Star Trek: The Next Generation”. Throughout all seven seasons, Mulgrew led the “Star Trek: Voyager” cast. However, as “Star Trek: Voyager” started after “TNG” ended, the opportunity for her to act alongside Patrick Stewart and the rest was limited to a “Star Trek” movie. Fortunately, the series creators managed to bring them together in the final full-length “TNG” production.

In more recent Star Trek series like Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Prodigy, it has become much simpler for characters from shows like The Next Generation and Voyager to interact, unlike in the franchise’s early days. For example, Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine is a key figure in the Star Trek: Picard ensemble, while Wil Wheaton’s Wesley Crusher appears alongside Kate Mulgrew in Prodigy season 2. However, it was not always straightforward for The Next Generation to recognize Voyager’s existence back then.

In the same timeframe, the “Star Trek: The Generation” films and all seven seasons of “Star Trek: Voyager” were simultaneously released. Since Captain Janeway’s crew was stranded in the Delta Quadrant during this period, the franchise had to find innovative ways to include “Voyager” cast members in movies that continued the storyline from “The Next Generation”. Remarkably, they achieved this feat, although none of the primary Voyager characters made an appearance in the first three films. Instead, two of Kate Mulgrew’s co-stars featured in 1996’s “Star Trek: First Contact”, portraying characters distinct from those they are usually recognized for.

In a different role from his character on Star Trek: Voyager, Robert Picardo made a brief appearance in Star Trek: First Contact, portraying the USS Enterprise-E’s EMH, a role distinct from the Emergency Medical Hologram he played on Voyager. Meanwhile, Ethan Phillips had a more disconnected cameo in First Contact compared to his performance as Neelix on Voyager, showing up briefly as a holographic maître d’, which was less recognizable due to the absence of his Talaxian makeup. Lastly, Kate Mulgrew made her first appearance as Admiral Janeway in Nemesis, marking the initial Star Trek: Voyager cameo in the TNG movie series.

Voyager & Deep Space Nine Both Crossed Over With Star Trek: The Next Generation (& Each Other)

The 90s Star Trek shows referenced each other in different ways

Since Star Trek: Voyager started after the last episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Patrick Stewart’s series couldn’t acknowledge Kate Mulgrew’s character. However, luckily, characters from The Next Generation were featured in Voyager. For instance, John de Lancie’s Q and Jonathon Frakes’ Commander Riker appeared on the show. In an interesting twist, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, which aired briefly alongside The Next Generation, had Captain Picard make an appearance, while eventually incorporating Michael Dorn’s Worf as a main character.

Star Trek: Voyager started after Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and because their settings were so different, any meaningful crossovers had to take place quickly. Thus, in the premiere of Voyager, titled “Caretaker,” the crew was seen gathering at the Deep Space Nine space station, meeting Quark, played by Armin Shimerman. Conversely, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine had a brief appearance by Robert Picardo, who portrayed both an EMH and its creator, Dr. Lewis Zimmerman. Additionally, Tim Russ made a guest appearance as Mirror Tuvok in season 3’s “Through the Looking Glass.” Therefore, Star Trek: Nemesis was merely one instance of actors from Star Trek: Voyager influencing the broader franchise.
