As a seasoned traveler and avid observer of social media, I must say that Shawn Johnson and her family’s European adventure is a testament to their zest for life and their unwavering dedication to creating cherished memories as a unit. The sheer ambition and determination they display in traversing the continent with three young children are truly commendable.
2024 Paris Olympics showcased numerous displays of power and agility on the race track, in swimming pools, and across various gymnastics equipment within the Bercy Arena, highlighting strength and speed.
Meanwhile, an often overlooked accomplishment was unfolding mere steps away in the crowd. Given that they were on a journey with three children aged under five, Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson East and her spouse Andrew East certainly deserve recognition for their remarkable effort, reminiscent of an Olympic triumph.
Shawn, aged 32, playfully said to TopMob News before departing from Nashville to France with his daughter Drew (age 4) and sons Jett (age 3) and Bear (8 months), “We might as well be a traveling circus, but rest assured, we’ll be there.”
Not only did they successfully complete their visit to the Games, but they even managed to fit in trips to London and Sorrento, Italy on either side of it.
Shawn acknowledged that it surpassed every anticipation he had, and surprisingly, despite the chaos, it turned out to be workable.
A definite highlight for the athlete—who flipped her way to four medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics—was attending the gymnastics all-around competition in Paris with Andrew, 32, Drew and her mom Teri Johnson.
Shawn admitted that he wasn’t sure if his preschooler would endure for just a couple of minutes, or even up to ten minutes, but surprisingly, she truly seemed to enjoy the experience.
Particularly the part where she got to watch Simone Biles do her thing.
As a dedicated admirer, I couldn’t help but share this charming anecdote: “I used to inquire repeatedly, ‘Mama, where’s the Top Notch?'” Shawn disclosed. “You see, I was always extolling the virtues of Simone, emphasizing how exceptional she is. Instead of calling her by name, my little one would affectionately refer to her as ‘Mama, where’s The Best?'”
And though Drew is still pretty committed to her dream of figure skating, noted Shawn, “She thought it was so special and it was. It was just a really cool full-circle moment.”
Although Shawn would rate their Olympic Games experience a perfect 10, they admitted that some of their favorite moments occurred beyond the Olympics. “One night, after finishing dinner, we ran around playing chase in the yard while enjoying a stunning sunset,” she shared. “It was a simple pleasure, but it allowed us to be a family and explore a new location, which was incredibly enjoyable.”
Ditching their regular routine of Nashville life – such as afternoon snack platters, Jett helping with cooking dinner, and busy parents storing leftovers in their preferred Rubbermaid Brilliance containers – opened up an opportunity for them to dive headlong into the uncharted territory.
“Andrew, a former NFL long snapper, shared that our daily routines at home are quite predictable. However, stepping out of this familiar pattern created many cherished moments, such as impromptu dance parties in the living room during mornings and evenings,” is one way to paraphrase the original statement.
They granted TopMob News a sneak preview, revealing unique images from their extraordinary European vacation trip exclusively.
16 years after I watched Shawn Johnson East win a gold medal and three silvers at the 2008 Olympics, it’s clear to me that she’s still earning her place in gymnastics history. Not just for her incredible skills, but for bringing her whole squad – her husband Andrew East and their kids Drew, Jett, and Bear – to Paris all these years later. It feels like she’s added some more hardware to her collection, this time as a loving family champion!
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I shared the joyful news of welcoming my son Jett into the world during Tokyo’s Olympics last year, which unfortunately meant missing out on the Winter Games. However, the Olympic spirit is deeply ingrained within me, and I can hardly wait to immerse myself in it once again. Therefore, my family and I will undoubtedly make our way to future Olympic events, though we may resemble a traveling circus with all our members!
The journey along the Seine stood out as a memorable part of their chaotic adventure. On Instagram, Shawn expressed, “We were fortunate enough to witness countless historic structures,” he said, “and the children found it particularly enjoyable.”
Watching Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, Suni Lee, and Hezly Rivera compete for the U.S. gymnastics team was a “full circle” moment for Shawn, as she expressed to TopMob News. “It might sound overly sentimental and clichéd,” she admitted, “but returning to the Olympics, 16 years later, with my husband and my children by my side, holds a special significance.”
Though she acknowledged her 4-year-old daughter would likely judge just one element of the competition.
Shawn confessed that Drew primarily watches gymnastics because of the leotards, and he estimates that she might find them interesting for around twenty minutes before moving on.
“Shawn posted on Instagram that Mom, Dad, and he were barely getting any rest, but they were loving every moment of their adventure along the Seine River and at the Eiffel Tower,” or
Oh boy, let me tell you about our incredible adventure! I posted on Instagram that the iconic monument we visited had a whopping 1,665 steps, and guess what? We hoisted our little ones up each and every one of those steps! What a workout, but totally worth it!
Despite recognizing that their upcoming European journey was quite ambitious, Shawn confidently assured that they would find a way, given their children’s travel-friendly nature, prior to embarking on the trip.
Following a trip to Paris’ Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Montmartre, which included exploring several stores and eateries, Shawn expressed, “Today was another memorable day.”
During their time in Paris, the Eastern friends bookended their trip with excursions to London [and had delightful experiences enjoying traditional afternoon tea and touring Buckingham Palace], as well as Sorrento, Italy.
Shawn mentioned to TopMob that they plan on traveling across Europe for an entire month. They aim to experience everything. Their mode of transportation will include trains, airplanes, cars, and even boats.
Though Shawn cracked the highlight of the trip for her kids would be an outing to Disneyland Paris, she and Andrew enjoyed their beach day in Italy.
Shawn mentioned that while they take their entire family on vacation because they’d feel their absence too acutely, at a deeper level, they do it because having their kids around makes life even more enjoyable and fun.
As a passionate admirer, I can’t help but exclaim that living moments of lasting impact alongside this delightful threesome of mini-wonders is nothing short of a dream realized. Each time their eyes sparkle with the excitement of fresh adventures, it’s all the validation I need – every heartbeat is worth it!
Before departing for Nashville, the duo savored their final day under the Italian sun, as Shawn had stated on Instagram, it was an unforgettable journey of a lifetime.
