As a devoted fan of Hollywood and its captivating tales, I must say, the journey of “Legally Blonde” is nothing short of extraordinary. From its humble beginnings at a Beverly Hills bar to the silver screen, this film has undeniably left an indelible mark on pop culture. If you’re comfortable using legal jargon in everyday life, Reese Witherspoon wants you.

The Academy Award-winning actress, known for turning the Harvard Law student character Elle Woods into an icon in the 2001 movie “Legally Blonde,” has launched a worldwide search for actors to play her character during her teenage years in the upcoming prequel series based on that period of her life.

The actress excitedly shared on Instagram on September 25th that we have begun the audition process and it’s open to everyone, “Indeed, this is an open call-out. We are looking for the perfect actress to portray young Elle Woods during her high school years.

“I cannot wait to see all the Elle Woods’ out there,” she concluded. “This is gonna be really fun!”

This year, a 48-year-old announced that her production company, Hello Sunshine, would collaborate with Prime Video on a new series. A press statement hinting at the show depicted the renowned character as a dynamic, natural leader who never hesitates to help another woman adjust her crown.

The statement continues, “Elle’s captivating character illuminates the world with a blend of self-assurance, vulnerability, and sincerity that leaves everyone enchanted.” As Elle matures in the 90s, she will experience her initial romance and heartache, and along the way, she will uncover her strong moral beliefs.

Reese first brought to life the renowned character in the initial film, which earned more than $141 million worldwide at the ticket office. Two years later, she reappeared as the same character in Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde, and served as a producer for the 2009 direct-to-video sequel titled Legally Blondes.

Back in 2018, the actress shared her intentions to reprise her role in a third “Legally Blonde” movie. Later, Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor agreed to pen the script in 2020. Recently, Reese provided TopMob News with an evasive update on the upcoming sequel, casually mentioning, “Mindy and I have been putting a lot of effort into several projects together.

Indeed, it was revealed that the actress had plans to reprise her role in a third “Legally Blonde” movie as far back as 2018. Later in 2020, Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor were enlisted to pen the screenplay. Recently, when asked about the eagerly anticipated sequel by TopMob News, Reese merely hinted at their joint efforts, stating, “Mindy and I are putting a lot of effort into many projects together.

It was during a torts lecture that the spark of genius hit Amanda Brown, the writer of Legally Blonde, leading her to create a humorous take on law school. As she shared with Stanford Magazine in 2001, six years after leaving university to focus on writing, she drew heavily from her personal experiences for the 2001 comedy. While Elle Woods’ law school journey shifted from Stanford to Harvard due to Brown’s alma mater’s reluctance to associate with the film, some of Brown’s quirks remained, such as her affection for pink stationery and fluffy pens.

3. In the role of Elle Woods, a year after she left Stanford behind, Reese Witherspoon immersed herself in college life, attending lectures at Loyola Law School and dining with sorority members at the University of Southern California to gain insight. She described this experience as similar to an anthropological study, learning about their dietary habits, behaviors, and child-rearing practices.

Meanwhile, Matthew Davis, portraying Elle’s soon-to-be ex Warner Huntington III (the character seeking a Jackie instead of a Marilyn), drew inspiration from George W. Bush. He prepared for the role by reading the then-president’s biography.

4. Months after giving birth to her now 24-year-old daughter Ava Phillippe with Ryan Phillippe in September 1999, Witherspoon assumed the role. She confessed to Cinema.com that some nights, when Ava fell ill and cried through the night, she would struggle to soothe her back to sleep before rushing to set for makeup at 7 am. Adding to her stress was the character she was portraying, a bubbly and energetic California preppy who always smiled, which left Witherspoon feeling overwhelmed and questioning if she would survive the role.

5. In truth, we almost encountered another well-known blonde sporting last year’s Prada footwear. As the script for the role was handed to Christina Applegate at the end of her 10-year stint as Kelly Bundy on “Married… with Children,” she confessed to ETonline in 2015 that she hesitated because she didn’t want to repeat herself, saying, “What an idiotic decision that was, wasn’t it?

6. Meanwhile, Luke Wilson didn’t have to go through an audition process to play the role of Elle’s eventual love interest, Emmett. Co-screenwriter Kirsten Smith shared with Insider that they had repeatedly sent the casting director messages urging them to consider Wilson for the part, saying “Luke Wilson, Luke Wilson!” Eventually, after a table read where another actor played Emmett, they persisted, stating “Luke Wilson, Luke Wilson!”, and he agreed it was a great idea. They responded, “We’ve been telling you!” indicating that they had suggested him earlier.

Originally thought to portray one of Elle’s sorority members, Ali Larter, seized the chance to try out for the role of Brooke Windham, the popular fitness figure under suspicion of murdering her much older husband. As she read lines from Brooke’s jailhouse liposuction confession (“It’s not like ordinary women can have this rear!”) for director Robert Luketic, she said during the cast’s October 2020 reunion, “I recall thinking, ‘How can I truly convince him that I want this role and can make it convincing and enjoyable?’ I just reached over and gave my rear an aggressive squeeze and went for it. And he responded, ‘Alright, you got it girl. You were committed.’

8. Alanna Ubach ingeniously sought assistance from Jessica Cauffiel to secure the role of Elle’s sorority sister Serena, with Cauffiel (who was already cast as Margot) recalling their encounter in the bathroom during a chemistry read. Ubach approached her and asked if she was part of the film, to which Cauffiel responded. After borrowing Cauffiel’s red lipstick, Ubach made a more substantial request for help landing the job. Strapped for cash and needing to cover rent, she humorously pleaded with Cauffiel for assistance. Impressed by her wit and boldness, Cauffiel agreed to help. In order to demonstrate their chemistry, they decided to perform synchronized actions during the audition, with Ubach ultimately getting the role and the two becoming close friends since then.

10. As a lifestyle expert, I found myself utilizing my knack for adaptability during filming, particularly when executing the manicure scene with my co-star. In a charming exchange with a background actress of Vietnamese descent at our recent reunion, I mused aloud, “What if we become such regulars at this nail salon that I end up mastering the language?

10. In truth, Luketic welcomed any outlandish suggestion wholeheartedly. As Cauffiel put it, “He granted us a great deal of autonomy,” referring to the debut feature film director who approved of Cauffiel’s proposal for Margot to trip off a pedestal during the bridal salon scene. “I asked him, ‘Robert, can I fall?'” she reminisced. “And he replied, ‘Get her a mattress! Get her a mattress!’

11. During the 2020 reunion, Davis admitted that he felt both scared and excited for his debut in the major film role as Warner. He explained, “I was so out of my depth,” recalling his fresh arrival from Salt Lake City, Utah. “I was just off the back of a farm truck, and I couldn’t leave Utah fast enough. Somehow, I landed a part in Legally Blonde.” Green as grass and smitten with his costars (“He had a crush on everyone,” Cauffiel told The New York Times), Davis confessed, “I was terrified every moment of it.

13. Filming Elle’s law school application video turned out to be more challenging than securing a spot at Harvard Law School, according to Witherspoon.

14. It was exceptionally warm during Reese Witherspoon’s filming of Elle’s initial day at law school, where UCLA stood in for Harvard. In an ensemble that hinted at a cooler autumnal Boston feel—a button-down with a tie beneath a cinched sweater—”I was drenched in sweat,” the actress admitted. The costume designer intervened to emphasize that Elle “had to look the part completely,” Witherspoon explained further. “Sophie de Rakoff” insisted, “You are wearing this sweater. You are fastening the collar…it needs to be done this way.” To which Reese responded, “Alright!

15. It’s only reasonable, therefore, that the Oscar-winning actress was permitted to retain every one of the 60 costumes she donned in the movie. As she revealed on Instagram, they are carefully preserved between tissue paper and housed in a specialized storage unit. She takes great care to monitor them closely.

16. Instead of almost memorizing a musical number with a bend-and-snap, the cast invested a month in creating a song and dance-centric version of the nail salon scene. This variation showcased Elle displaying a move that, from her perspective, has an 83% chance of being invited for dinner. However, as Witherspoon explained, it felt strange having only one musical sequence.

18. The film’s conclusion underwent significant changes during post-production. Initially, the movie concluded with Elle winning her court case and sealing her relationship with Emmett by kissing him on the courthouse steps. A year later, Elle and Vivian were friends, and Vivian was now blonde, they had started the Blond Legal Defense Club and were distributing flyers in the quad. However, this was not the ending of the film as per Smith’s manuscript, but test audiences expressed a strong preference against it. “We screened the movie several times,” McCullah explained, “and every time people didn’t want to end it with a kiss. They felt it wasn’t about Elle getting a boyfriend, which was great to hear.

20. During the 2020 cast reunion, Witherspoon, who began her acting career after leaving Stanford early, excitedly declared, “This is where I attended college.” She humorously added, “I might not have finished college, but I certainly completed Legally Blonde.
