The Young Bucks (Matthew and Nicholas Jackson), who were previously AEW World Tag Team Champions, are discussing how a storyline from NXT influenced them to modify their EVP storyline. For much of 2024, they had been playing villains, initially teaming up with Jack Perry and Kazuchika Okada. They managed to overthrow Tony Khan in the process, eventually capturing their third set of Tag Titles and breaking the record for most title reigns once again.
Over time, they deliberately began appearing less active on TV, with an aim to highlight teams within their division and potentially lose championships in this manner. Yet, things didn’t go as planned.
As their reign advanced, they strategically grew more relaxed on television as part of a scheme to draw attention to competing teams within their division and ultimately let those teams win the championships. But, unfortunately, things didn’t unfold this way.
How WWE NXT Impacted The Young Bucks’ Title Reign
Initially, Nicholas planned an activity called Elite Roulette or EVP Roulette, where he’d spin a wheel each week. Whichever wrestler the needle pointed to unexpectedly would have to wrestle with us immediately, and we’d defend our title on the spot. He wanted to do this every week, with no idea who it’d be until the last minute. In the wings, we’d keep a group of 12 tag teams ready, and when their name was drawn, they’d enter the ring for the match. Nick also mentioned that there was a particular team we intended to defeat swiftly in just five seconds. As per Fightful Select, The Outrunners were under consideration for this role.
Originally, we were determined to carry out our plan. However, one day Sonjay [Dutt] texted us and suggested a change to our idea. It turned out NXT was hosting a ‘spin the wheel, make a deal’ event. Matt continued, “That week, we found ourselves in a tricky situation. I had been eagerly anticipating this plan to succeed, to battle against four or five random teams and quickly lose the titles. But alas, I had to let go of that idea and accept that it wouldn’t come to fruition.” This news was disappointing for him.
Instead, they encountered Private Party back in October for the third time this year, losing their championship titles to them. The local AEW team is currently in their debut reign as champions. Their initial defense took place at AEW Full Gear against Kings of the Black Throne, The Acclaimed, and The Outrunners in a four-way match.
