Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Almost Included Another Netflix Marvel Character

In the hit series “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” a variety of Marvel characters make an appearance, but it could have featured even more. Before its debut, ComicBook interviewed showrunner Jeff Trammell and asked about some unconventional character decisions in the storyline. Trammell disclosed that an entirely different character was initially considered for Nico’s role – Jessica Jones. Pondering this alternate scenario is intriguing, and it’s evident that this isn’t the only creative twist on Marvel mythology that Trammell and his team contemplated during production. If the series persists, we might see other renowned Marvel characters popping up in surprising locations.

Trammell started speaking cautiously. “To put it simply, there was another character we thought about including. However, I’m not sure if I should mention this.” He continued, “What I can share is that we wanted to do something unique for the story we wanted to tell. It felt like for this tale to unfold properly, specific characters needed to fill certain roles. Personally, I adore Nico and the series ‘Runaways’. This feels like a blend of beloved characters I’d be excited to see interact with Spider-Man.

Trammell explained, ‘Being able to introduce characters like Nico, Jeanne Foucault, Amadeous Cho, and others who have deep roots in the comics is a fantastic opportunity. It’s also our hope that this will draw new audiences to these characters and their stories in the comic books.’ Regarding who Peter’s classmate was originally intended to be, there were many discussions about de-aging Jessica Jones for that role.’

This concept seems intriguing, particularly since it appears to share elements with “Marvel’s What If…?”. However, it feels like this idea may have originated in an earlier draft. A youthful Jessica Jones could share certain traits with a character like Nico Minoru who exhibits a dark and brooding nature. However, such changes would likely have significant implications on the overall narrative. Furthermore, the possibility of recasting Jessica Jones arises, but given the current climate, it might be sensitive to utilize the Defenders characters for anything other than a live-action revival at this time.
