It appears that Microsoft is becoming increasingly innovative with its assertive strategies aimed at boosting Bing and Edge‘s performance relative to Google. In a recent instance, the tech company is attempting to persuade users to continue using Microsoft Edge when they search for Google’s Web Store via Bing instead of immediately switching to Chrome (as reported by Windows Report).
According to Windows Central, they tried to reproduce the situation mentioned by them and were presented with the following pop-up notification:
Experience your preferred add-ons seamlessly across browsers. Continue enjoying top-notch speed, enhanced privacy, increased productivity, and greater value. Give it a try today.
It’s worth noting that I tried to conduct a similar search using Google and Chrome, but instead of looking for the Chrome Web Store, I searched for Microsoft Edge Add-ons. The search results were clear and didn’t display any pop-up ads trying to prevent me from changing browsers or search engines.
It’s not the first occasion that Microsoft has employed assertive strategies and deceptive layouts to outperform Google in the competition. Last year, Microsoft utilized its Bing Wallpaper app to encourage Windows 11 users to adjust their settings to prefer Bing for swift and secure search results, surreptitiously installing Microsoft’s Bing extension into Google Chrome without explicit consent from users.
Lately, Microsoft has been observed employing “misleading strategies” to resemble Google in Bing, even incorporating a similar logo design found on the Google Search homepage, which is commonly known as the Doodle. Parisa Tabriz, leader of Google’s Chrome team, expressed her concern, stating that this move by Microsoft represents a “significant drop” in their competitive efforts.
Mimicking someone’s work is a sign of admiration, but Microsoft copying the layout of Google’s homepage could be seen as part of their strategy to deceive users and restrict options. This is not an uncommon tactic in their history.
New year; new low @Microsoft”
Mozilla accused Microsoft of employing misleading strategies and potentially harmful designs to provide an edge (pun intended) for its Edge browser over other browsers running on Windows, allegedly for competitive advantage. Intriguingly, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella disclosed that Google earns more revenue from Windows than the entirety of Microsoft’s profits.
