Today, I want to shed light on why the West Coast Avengers are one of the best teams in Marvel’s roster, and trust me when I say you won’t be able to change my mind about it. This team may have been labeled as a motley crew in the past, but maybe that’s what makes them so effective.

Similar to numerous Marvel teams, the group responsible for the West Coast Avengers tends to undergo frequent changes. The original incarnation of the team was established in 1984 during a limited series run. Since then, they’ve regrouped on several occasions, often with new members or spin-offs. Most recently, they reunited in 2024, introducing some unexpected elements, especially within their roster. Overall, reading the West Coast Avengers is a joy because it offers numerous surprises.

Original Run

1984 marked the assembly of the West Coast Avengers for the very first time, with Hawkeye taking charge. This might come as a shock to some readers, but it’s only the start of the story. Hawkeye aimed to broaden the influence of the Avengers, enabling the heroes to save beyond their usual region. In essence, his goal was to safeguard the West Coast. Consequently, the West Coast Avengers were established. Hawkeye invited Mockingbird, Wonder Man, Tigra, and Rhodey (who was Iron Man at that time) to be part of his squad. Of course, as is common with such teams, their roster would undergo changes over time.

This team might not boast A-list superheroes, but it’s precisely their underdog status that made their tale captivating. Throughout their adventures, they battled foes of all sizes, ranging from common criminals to formidable adversaries like Graviton. Moreover, the team grappled with numerous personal issues, adding depth and authenticity to their storyline. Interestingly, this team served as the muse for the Great Lakes Avengers. Therefore, if you’re a fan of that team, you can credit the West Coast Avengers for its creation.

A New Team – and the Introduction of a Fan-Favorite

2018 marked the return of the West Coast Avengers, but this time around, it was Kate Bishop steering the ship as Hawkeye instead of Clint Barton. The confusion over who’s who? That’s just part of the fun! Joining forces with us were America Chavez, Quentin Quire (the young mutant known for his unpredictable powers), Fuse (a superhero with a penchant for pyrotechnics), and everyone’s favorite fourth-wall-breaking heroine, Gwenpool. As odd as this team might sound, it’s the perfect mix of talent. You may wonder how Gwenpool came to join – truth be told, she didn’t have many other choices, but found a friend in us all. From battling B.R.O.D.O.K. (MODOK trying to be cool) to fighting vampires with deep-rooted families, our adventures were as chaotic and memorable as they come!

In this adaptation of the “West Coast Avengers,” penned by Kelly Thompson, there was a strong emphasis on the team’s quirky, humorous nature. For instance, they consented to have a reality show document their daily lives as a means of securing financial support. This proved to be quite amusing, offering chances for the characters to express themselves in a way reminiscent of popular television tropes.

In terms of accomplishments during their 2018 run, the West Coast Avengers franchise holds a special place in fandom’s heart due to the introduction of Jeff the Land Shark. This iconic character made his debut in issue #7, initially serving under B.R.O.D.O.K., but he ultimately switched allegiances and joined the superior team. This decision sets the stage for potentially perilous events, considering who Ultron is. The series continues, so if you’re intrigued to follow this unusual alliance, it’s worth keeping an eye on.

One aspect we adore about the West Coast Avengers is their freedom to explore different approaches. The team’s composition is dynamic, with a mix of major, minor, and even lesser-known heroes joining forces. Their adversaries range from obscure villains to the most formidable threats in Marvel Universe, offering a diverse range of challenges. The narratives are engrossing and frequently focus on character development, providing insights into less-explored heroes. This unique feature sets them apart, making them stand out among other teams.
