Enthusiasts have longed for a sequel or revival of the beloved medical comedy “Scrubs”, and this wish was granted when it was revealed a few months back that its creator, Bill Lawrence, was indeed working on bringing it back to life. Previously, it was mentioned that the original cast members were in discussions about coming back, but now, there’s confirmed news that a significant figure from the original series is set to reappear: none other than the character of J.D. himself.
As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that according to Deadline, Zach Braff is officially back as John “J.D.” Dorian in the Scrubs reboot! Bringing Braff on board wasn’t a walk in the park; negotiations were quite the challenge, with numerous factors at play. The financial aspect was one of the obstacles, but so was Braff’s preference to film the series in Los Angeles instead of Vancouver, which had initially been planned. At one point, tensions ran so high that some even thought it might jeopardize the project altogether. However, fortunately, both parties managed to reach an agreement that ensured Braff’s return to the small screen once more!
Curious to know more about the journey the series took to coming back to our screens? Keep reading!
The ‘Scrubs’ Reboot Has Been Difficult To Put Together
The revival of the popular TV series “Scrubs” is being worked on by ABC right now, but putting it together has proven challenging due to various factors. A significant part of the difficulty lies in negotiating with key personnel, starting with the show’s creator, Lawrence. Despite being under an exclusive overall deal with Warner Bros. TV, “Scrubs” is being developed by Disney’s 20th TV and ABC. After some negotiations, the issue was resolved, but unfortunately, Lawrence will not be involved as a writer or showrunner in the “Scrubs” reboot because he’s currently busy working on multiple shows for WBTV such as “Ted Lasso,” “Shrinking,” “Bad Monkey,” and an upcoming Steve Carell HBO comedy.
Finalizing agreements with Lawrence and Braff will likely facilitate the recruitment of other cast members such as Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, John C. McGinley, and Judy Reyes. 20th TV plans to contact them shortly to finalize their contracts. Concerning Judy Reyes, who is currently a lead in High Potential, reports indicate that arrangements will be made for her to participate in both projects.
From 2001 to 2010, ‘Scrubs’ aired first on NBC and later on ABC, wrapping up after nine seasons and 182 episodes. This comedic series centered around the staff at the fictional Sacred Heart Hospital. The title is both a reference to the scrubs they wear in their medical roles and their lower status as interns at the beginning of the show. The main character, J.D., portrayed by Zach Braff, has his daydreams depicted through short stories, while the lives of his colleagues are also examined.
Zach Braff has had a remarkable career since his time on Scrubs, where he was recognized with a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and three Golden Globe Award nominations. In 2004, he stepped into directing with the movie Garden State, which had a budget of $2.5 million and went on to gross over $35 million. Other films he’s worked on include The Last Kiss, The Ex, and In Dubious Battle. He continues to collaborate with J.J. Abrams, having directed episodes for Ted Lasso (earning Emmy and DGA nominations) and Shrinking. He has also acted in Abrams’ Bad Monkey, and is set to direct the upcoming HBO comedy series by prolific creator Carrell, created by Abrams as well.
