Zatanna #1 Crushes Opening Night with Magical Debut (Review)

DC delves into the enchanting realm of sorcery as beloved magician Zatanna takes center stage for a fresh ongoing series penned by Jamal Campbell (known for his work on ‘Far Sector’ and ‘Superman’) and Ariana Maher (letterer of ‘Superman’ and ‘Absolute Power’). The team’s combination promises an exciting read, and they certainly deliver. In the inaugural issue of ‘Zatanna’, you’ll find a charming blend of fun and tension, with significant challenges and surprising moments abounding, all while presenting a visually stunning experience. Zatanna kicks off the series in an impressive way, and it seems things will only grow more fascinatingly complex from hereon.

In their previous appearances in Superman’s comic, Campbell and Maher hinted at the possibilities of a Zatanna series. Now, Zatanna embarks on an exciting journey with her team, preparing to perform at a well-known venue for her upcoming show. However, the straightforward storyline becomes complicated due to the emergence of a fresh antagonist who holds immense potential, a rarity in itself.

As a cinephile, I must admit that it’s not uncommon to see new villains introduced only to vanish just as quickly. However, The Lady White isn’t one of those forgettable characters. Campbell is skillfully planting enigmas about this sinister figure and her intentions towards Zatanna, leaving us guessing about who she serves. The unique blend of classic Hollywood aesthetics with the uncanny supernatural has me eager for more insights into this intriguing character.

One notable feature throughout the book is the consistent use of classic Hollywood motifs, evident in every detail. However, it truly shines during the initial action scene, where movie posters function as portals and seem to hail from the annals of cinema. Yet, these elements not only pay homage to cinematic history but also have real-life impacts on Zatanna’s companions. Campbell and Maher skillfully exploit all these aspects to great effect.

Across different locations, the changes in hues and moods are striking indeed. However, it’s not until the closing chapters that the significance of the situation becomes clear. Yet, even then, numerous queries remain unanswered before this reality truly sets in.

As a film enthusiast, diving into issue #1 of Zatanna was like embarking on an exhilarating and unforeseen magical ride that pays homage to the character’s rich past while still infusing a sense of novelty and excitement, particularly with its captivating villain. To be honest, I anticipated nothing less given the talent behind it, but even my high expectations were surpassed. This story has now officially kicked off, and let me tell you, it’s off to an amazing start!
