As a long-time fan of both wrestling and anime, I can wholeheartedly appreciate Zelina Vega’s unique blend of these two worlds. Her dedication to cosplaying characters from popular series like Tokyo Ghoul is truly commendable. When it comes to her Ken Kaneki cosplay, it’s not just the intricate details that catch my eye, but the deeper meaning behind her choice.
Wrestling sensation Zelina Vega isn’t new to blending her passion for cosplay with her professional wrestling career. Over time, you’ve likely admired her elaborate, bedazzled outfits on WWE Raw, SmackDown, and even Live Events. Many other wrestlers, such as Jade Cargill, Candice LeRae, Johnny Gargano, The New Day, Seth Rollins, AEW’s Mercedes Mon (known as Sasha Banks in WWE), Ricochet, Rey Mysterio, and countless others, have followed suit, proudly displaying their fandom within the WWE.
Zelina blends her geeky enthusiasm by merging two realms that don’t usually get much attention despite their frequent intersections in pop culture – wrestling and various “nerdy” domains such as gaming, anime, comics, superheroes, and the like. In partnership with ComicBook, Zelina offers a sneak peek at her upcoming cosplay projects as Halloween approaches. To start things off, Zelina is unveiling her affection for the popular series Tokyo Ghoul, focusing particularly on the renowned character, Ken Kaneki.
In a different version of Tokyo, Japan, resides a captivating dark fantasy world where humans live alongside supernatural creatures known as ghouls. Unlike humans, ghouls resemble us but sustain themselves by feeding on human life. This popular manga has expanded into various other media, such as video games, an animated series, and a movie.
Zelina explains that her decision to cosplay as Ken was largely influenced by the deep emotional connection she feels towards his heartbreaking background story. In particular, she admires the poignant tale of Ken losing his humanity and embracing his ghoul nature, symbolized by a fateful encounter with Rize and the transformation scene depicted through blood dripping onto a white rose, transforming into a spider lily.
The reason I’ve added spider lilies to my attire and hair is because I admire Ken’s distinctive style, but what truly captivates me is the symbolism behind him embodying Marie Antoinette syndrome. Being psychologically tormented by Jason to such an extent that his hair turned white. The phrase “What’s 1000-7?” lingers in my memory. The gear Zelina is talking about was exhibited on a recent episode of WWE Raw, where the attire, embellished with spider lilies and crystals, was white, similar to what we see now. Her hair, reminiscent of Ken’s, bears a spider lily clip, and there are other red accents that unify the overall look.
The spider lily’s origins began when they were planted atop graves to keep rodents and other creatures from digging. Over time, they became synonymous with death in Japanese folklore, and in Tokyo Ghoul specifically, there is a scene where Kaneki is surrounded by the blood red flowers, signifying the death of his old self. Elsewhere in pop culture another Tokyo Ghoul superfan, chart-topping rapper Megan Thee Stallion, has many references to the flowers in the music video for her single “HISS.”
Who is Ken Kaneki From Tokyo Ghoul?
Ken is one of the major characters from the widely acclaimed manga “Tokyo Ghoul,” published in 2011. After his meeting with Rize Kamishiro following their date, he undergoes a transformation into a half-ghoul. This change compels him to navigate a challenging social and political environment as he clings to what remains of his human nature.
Half-ghouls, unlike full-blooded ones, have an edge in strength thanks to their distinct abilities. What sets Ken apart, though, is that only one of his eyes changes during the transformation known as the Kakugan – a feature that makes him stand out and is a key aspect of Zelina’s cosplay.
Ken’s ghoul mask is crafted from genuine leather, featuring a spacious jawline adorned with synthetic teeth and gums for a lifelike effect. Nestled within it is a convenient zipper, allowing the ghouls to effortlessly open and close the mask during meal times without having to remove the entire mask. This design also safeguards their identities from being exposed by the CCG (formerly known as the Commission of Counter Ghoul), an organization that aimed to eradicate ghouls by exploiting their powers against them.
